Impact of the Undead on the Medieval Society

Majority of fantasy settings have their share of the undead creatures. And it is not hard to see why, as the medieval mythology also has a very extensive list of the walking corpses. Zombies, liches, vampires, and so on, are all very prominent in the mythology and thus the fantasy.

In many settings, the undead roam the land, attacking any traveller unlucky to come across their path. They seem to be far more present at night, as is the case in Dragon’s Dogma video game. During the day, only problem are bandits and an occasional monster. During the night, the undead are everywhere. They roam the land, the roads, are summoned by mages, or dig their way out of the ground.

But in most cases, the undead appear to be a fringe threat. Society appears to be fundamentally unchanged from its pseudo-medieval template. Travel, trade and warfare all are seemingly no different from how they will have been without the undead.
