Legionary Camps in Pannonia

Aldarion

Archmage

Four large legionary camps were tasked with guarding the river of Danube along its Pannonian segment. Camps were at places which were settled by barbarians even before the arrival of Romans. Once Romans arrived, Danube became the key frontier for defense of the Empire against barbarians, and once it collapsed the Western Empire was conquered by peoples crossing the Danube.

Military camps also had social significance. Old Amber road passed along the Danube, and was the main avenue of trade with barbarians. While army lived within the camps, civilians over time settled around them, forming canabae but also regular cities. Military camps were an ideal opportunity for craftsmen, making them over time into industrial, trade and social centers.
