It's called "Top Hat's Race and other chess stories"
Despite the name, and the fact all stories being chess-themed, there is no need to be a strong chess player to appreciate them. It helps if you know the horsie moves in an L-shape, but honestly even that is not strictly necessary.
The titular story of the collection, "Top Hat's Race", was previously published in ChessBase magazine, with the following comments from the editor:
"We publish the following story with great pleasure. It is by one of the most imaginative writers we know. ... This is not a piece we would wish anyone to miss."
Stories in the collection include:
- A monopoly piece transplanted into a chess board makes new friends
- A solitary astronaut in space is challenged to a chess game - by whom?
- The inner workings of a chess player's mind
