Randoms odds and ends from history

Somehow it appears there isn't a thread like this yet.

If you come across something interesting or weird from history that could perhaps be fun to work into fantasy stories, but you don't have any immediate use for right now, share them here with others who might have good uses for them.

Many cities in medieval Italy were famously rich, and the wealthy upper class often spend a lot of their wealth on culture and arts. And in Bologna they somehow ended up building really big towers to show off their money. Building giant towers in an earth quake area wasn't necessarily the smartest idea and most of them have since been torn down or collapsed. But a few are still standing and very impressive landmarks:

While most of the towers are gone, their locations and heights are quite well documented and there would have been somewhere around 100 to 200 in the 12th and 13th century. While I am not aware of contemporary depictions of how the city looked like, there are a couple of reconstructions around which show how amazingly weird the city's skyline would have looked back then.

Bolognan aristocrats must have had really impressive legs.
