I’m planning a post-apocalyptic cat and dog series. They must find the remaining humans. The problem is their guide is a criminal. They traverse a number of terrains at a certain date. What race should they find?

As for what races, I guess you mean species. The best thing is to make things up. Take a look at Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts for an outstanding example.

The idea was they were looking for the last humans, and then they kind of Time Machine into an alternate reality.
Maybe the idea was to cross a lot of terrain in the beginning, but it became a search for the humans, and a paranoia about the powers of their guide.
