The Also Bought Gods Must be Crazy

Just a quick laughing Rant! Seriously, laughing.

So, a book hits my #1 slot in also boughts today... now don't get me wrong, this book might be awesome, truly, awesome. It's got editorial reviews up the friggin' arse:

Edmund White (author)
Publisher's Weekly
Kirkus
Foreward Reviews
Booklist

AND MORE!

What is it? Title: What's Left of the Night. It's a translation from Greek, a novel about a famous Greek poet. And it isn't even released yet, but it's #1 on my also boughts! Woohoo! I mean seriously, I'm tempted to read the book, don't get me wrong, it sounds interesting... but come ON man!

What insanity hath the Amazonian gods wrought!?

Okay, I'm all better now.

#3 for me today:

The Facts of the Matter: Looking Past Today’s Rhetoric on the Environment and Responsible Development Kindle Edition
by David Parish (Author)

--for that novel about Cavafy.

Maybe your novel is being bought by people with diverse interests and not only those who want epic fantasy and only epic fantasy. Or maybe they can only handle one epic fantasy at a time, with a nice break between epic fantasy novels.

Oh yes, a new #1 also bought today! Don't ask, it's just bizarre. I've no idea what the hell Amazon is doing with these things in their promos, but that's the only way I can conceive them showing up with Eve of Snows. EoS is trapped between two or three groups of books... my ads keep dragging in more fantasy, and the random assed Amazon promos keep draggin in... insanity. Amazon is often noted for having smart folks working there, but that algorithm has some serious stupidity issues. I'm sure its purist, but not weighting it (more) toward genre is flat dumb.

Yeah, that one showed up in mine the other day. If you look at Yavis, it'll give you a rough idea of book connections. I got an ad from Amazon the other day that presented how this ugly spiral continues. And sure, strange books will land in also boughts, but enough people have to have bought the same thing to weight them. That smells of the bad promo.

True. What is really wild is to look at the also boughts on Eve of Snows in the US or Canada, and then in the UK, where the also boughts weren't screwed up. Now in Australia, it's a small but very legit list, LOL.

Another fun one was watching how the also boughts shifted when I found an ad that really hit the 18-35 women marketplace. The cover styles changed a bit too, emphasizing younger female leads, and witches seem popular as heck.
