The United Solar Republic

The United Solar Republic (AKA The USR, The Human Empire, Sol government, *insert slur for humans* tribe, etc.) is the primary governing body and military force of the Human species, and here's their info, will add more via replies later

CAPITAL: New York, Earth, Sol system
GOVERNMENT: The USR is a colonial representative democracy, where members elect and send their representatives to, well, represent them in the Senate. the USR has 4 branches, The Executive, Legislative, Judicial, and Civil Branches
ECONOMY: Part Socialist-Part Capitalist, The USR has a mostly hands-off approach when it comes to certain industries (I.E clothing and toy industry), so long as they follow some regulations, such as worker's rights and quality control, but has nationalized almost all agricultural, residential, electrical, shipbuilding, logistical, and water industries, where it's distributed to all citizens, providing a "Basic standard of living" for all (or, at least most) 46 billion citizens living in the USR, free enterprise is not only allowed but greatly encouraged

MILITARY:
The USR armed forces are big, after public services, the USRM is the biggest budget eater. It is divided into 4 Corps
NAVY: The Astral navy, responsible for all in-space offensive/defensive actions, if you need to get grunts on the ground or bombard a planet from Orbit, you call them
ARMY: The ground forces, if you need a guy with a gun or need to secure a planet, you call them
SPACE MARINES: like the standard army but better trained and more specialized, If you want to cripple an enemy outpost with a small force or assassinate a leader, you call them
SPACE GAURD: the Astral Navy but for strictly civil assistance, such as anti-pirate ops or rescue ops, if you're stranded in space or being attacked by pirates, you call them.

IDEOLOGY:
Frontierism: a belief that humanity must expand out to the furthest it can and settle to maintain its civilization, ethically of course, if a planet or moon already has a civilization, then you leave them alone.
Strength through Differences: Humanity has a long history of killing each other over minor differences in ideas, but then they flipped it on its head, the differences of each human add a different perspective to the other, which makes the whole adaptable to most situations present
Human Exceptionalism: Humanity is special, on average, compared to other species, humans are more adaptable and more resistant to adverse conditions, this leads to the belief that Humanity is special enough to be the best for controlling the milky way galaxy. (CONSIDERED EXTREME AND PROBLEMATIC)

HISTORY:
The beginnings of the USR can be traced back to the early 20th century, when the then nations of France, the United States of America, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic, the United Kingdom, the Chinese Republic, and other Earth states formed the United Nations after a great war against a force of tyranny and fascism, as Earth grew into a more connected civilization, more and more members joined, at this point, the UN was more of an allyship between all states of Earth, until 2078, when the greats floods started
The great floods, caused by centuries of neglect by world powers to a growing climate crisis and rapid industrialization, lead to Earth's polar Ice caps melting almost completely, dumping billions of tons of water into earth's already mostly ocean surface, raising sea levels, so in an effort to combat it, nations started pooling resources and gave up full autonomy to the UN.
At the same time, an effort to colonize Mars was occurring, mostly by rich billionaires and their unwilling employees, as an escape from the problems their industries and businesses caused; They began terraformation efforts and attempted multiple times to succeed from Earth, but most of the time it was unsuccessful, until 2234, then the UN and it's martian colony started the First Interplanetary War, ending the lives of billions and leading to Martian independence.
As the years went on, the Martian Plutocracy and the United Nations of Earth fought over small territory disputes in the outer solar system, colonizing most of Jupiter and Satun's moons, the asteroid belt, a few of Uranus' moons, and one moon of Neptune, a skirmish in 2405 over Enceledus sparked the second interplanetary war, which lasted for over 20 years
Then comes the Flotsam, a group of wrecked advanced alien spacecraft on an interstellar trajectory that intercepted the Sun's gravity well and had it going straight through the Solar system, in 2430, humanity, seeing its chance, buried all the hatchets, and made their way to scavenge the wrecks for technology humanity only had in their dreams and stories, it took over a century to crack the powers of the Jump Drive, but they did it. The UNE and MP eventually united to form the USR and constructed the first faster-then-light spacecraft in 2537.
The Columbus was the first ever FTL spacecraft ever built by humanity, and it set off on its maiden voyage to Alpha Centauri (the nearest star system to Sol), on March 7th, 2538, 7:56:34 PM SET, The Columbus warped, and at 7:56:35 PM SET, it had confirmed to have arrived at Alpha Centauri in one piece, 12 hours later, it returned to sol, so beings the Human Interstellar Empire
The first sentient species humanity met was the Conetheans, a species of tall, avian humanoids with slightly more advanced tech, first contact was made on December 16th, 2578. with extreme language barriers, a basic language was established, a simplified form of Morse code, a lot of the time, symbols got mixed up, leading to the First Interstellar war, also known as the Coneth-Sol wars, in 2604 this was actually WAY less bad than the previous space wars fought by Humanity, with casualties on both sides only numbering in the tens of thousands, instead of the tens of millions. Humanity expanded and expanded throughout the local area and met more and more species, leading up to 2750 and the Sol-Pyrin wars.

Hm. That all works for me. Sending senators to Earth could wind up unwieldy if they have too many planets / colonies under their control though.

Acceptable.

I would add the 'First Exodus,' circa 2100-2300, an effort to send ten or twelve giant starships with around 100,000 people each in hibernation on journeys of 50-100 years to three or four nearby systems known to contain habitable extrasolar planets, with possible follow up expeditions.

Reason being, real world wise, the ability to detect and verify said planets is *almost* doable with current technology and there are a couple of slower than light schemes that are also almost technologically feasible. (Plus, of course, a couple of these behemoth STL ships are certain to 'go missing' - aka 'encounter something *really* weird in the void.'

Mmhh, maybe

No argument here.

Only if there are raptors involved, or Sam Neill.

First I'll say that I don't read alot of science fiction so that my comments with that in mind. I am however interested in both history and a bit in politics and political history so that's the perspective I come from.

But to start with, this on the government looks mostly good. Colonial senators shouldn't be a problem as long as there's a reliable way to send informaton and people between the core and the periphery of the state. Something you may want to consider if information and material can't travel to fast and free is how long terms each senator will serve. Like is it four years, ten years, for life? In a interstellar state, which I figure that this is, logistics should reasonable be a very important factor and also a factor that will affect the story in a significent way.

I have to ask though where the socialist part comes in. I see they have nationalized several industries but you may also want to adress wider socialist policies for socialism is to my knowledge more than just nationalization. I realize this may come in a later post further down as this setting is developed but I thought that I should mention it.

MILITARY:

So, what I wonder about is the Space Marines. They look like they're intended to be somewhat modelled on the USMC but they also seem to bleed over into the CIA kind of operations with "assassinate a leader" which sounds more like covert or special ops rather than the marines. But I'm no expert on the USMC so I could of course be wrong.

Should the Space Guard really be a part of the military and not a part of the police forces? Because they seem like a kind of Space Police and throwing tem in with the military seems an odd choice to me. But I don't know your reasons for this choice.

Who considers "Human Exceptionalism" to be extreme and problematic? As it stands it looks like its part of the ideology of the state and so the majority of the population is probably not going to considered it either extreme or problematic as they live in a state that endorse it and have access to state resources to propagate this idé among the population.

I'm afraid this is where you lost me in regards to the unification of mankind on planet Earth. In my opinion this is way to smooth, peaceful and calm. To suspend my disbelief I would need something which lies much closer to the historical dynamics of history. Which means alot of disagreement, short, sightedness and more of a ruckus in general.

The conflict between Earth and Mars looks believable to me so I don't feel that you need to change that part in some way.

But on another note, what kind of story are you looking to write here? It will be easier to make suggestions and see where it might work or fail if we knowar least the basic ideas about the story's nature this setting is to support. A military sci-fi will have different needs from a "slice of life" story about some terraforming colonists which in turn will need different stuff from a high-politics "Game of Thrones"-kind of story.

I have to ask though where the socialist part comes in. I see they have nationalized several industries but you may also want to adress wider socialist policies for socialism is to my knowledge more than just nationalization.
the USR provides most of its citizens with food, water, homes, and power for free*, and distributed by the government, along with healthcare. The USR provides you with the basics, you make the most of it and try to rise out of the basic standard of living, which about 60% of USR citizens manage to do by age 30.
that's the socialist part (I think)

*paid with taxpayer money
So, what I wonder about is the Space Marines. They look like they're intended to be somewhat modelled on the USMC but they also seem to bleed over into the CIA kind of operations with "assassinate a leader" which sounds more like covert or special ops rather than the marines. But I'm no expert on the USMC so I could of course be wrong.
Kinda the point of them, I just decided to mix the CIA and Marine corps together because why not? Heck, the USRMC has its own mini-navy and command structure and has limited autonomy from the rest of the USR government that is specifically so that it can run independent operations both within and outside of USR space

Should the Space Guard really be a part of the military and not a part of the police forces? Because they seem like a kind of Space Police and throwing tem in with the military seems an odd choice to me. But I don't know your reasons for this choice.
The US Coast Guard is a branch of the military, the USR Space Gaurd pretty much is the same but in space, thus, the USRCG is a branch of the military

Who considers "Human Exceptionalism" to be extreme and problematic?
Anyone trying to not anger the xenos with technology way higher than yours that you also want to have and could easily take over your outer territories that are currently fueling your economy. The most extreme form of this idea includes genociding entire species and terraforming entire planets

Agreed, going to add multiple civil wars that occurred during the unification times and continued tensions between local Earth and Martian governments

Im planning to write multiple short stories within this setting, exploring different parts of this world, because why not? It's fun

NEW USR LORE JUST DROPPED

Culture: due to the wide cultural differences and dozens of different languages and dialects of humans spread across an entire solar system, it's impractical to pinpoint a single representative culture of the USR, but there are a few traits that are universal to all human cultures. All human cultures deal with how one relates to each other, whether that be individualistic or collectivist, most focus on work and achieving higher status, and quite a few human cultures believe in some sort of god or spirits, and the majority see the family as the basic foundation of society. Many human cultures practice "shunning", or when a member of a group is kicked out of the group due to differences. Humans are also extremely social and work well in groups, especially when a shared goal is involved.
Language: The USR recognizes over 7,100 languages as "official languages", with the most common being English, Mandarin, Arabic, French, Hindi, and Belt. the majority of human languages have two components to them, a written and spoken/gesture component.

Technology: The USR is considered a "semi-advanced" civilization, with FTL but no other high-technology acquired from the flotsam. The lack of advancement, ironically, is within the field of Aerospace engineering, human ships have been operating on the same basic plans for over 500 years, drive at the bottom, everything else on top like a tower, with the only major advancement within that time frame was the Jump drive and it's continued miniaturization. The reason why the USR has such relatively low-grade spaceflight technology compared to every other civilization is that the USR really likes biotechnology, the USR excels in biological and medical science, cracking the ability not only of genetic engineering but also the capabilities to upload conscientious into a computer fully without losing the uploaded person's personality and being able to mostly re-map and download the uploaded's brain to a new, artificially grown human body, achieving immortality, over 400 years ago. Why does the USR spend so much time on biotechnology and environmental science? It's because they almost killed their planet and caused roughly 30% of all terrain species to go extinct along with converting half of all landmasses on Earth into either agricultural or urban, Earth is on life support, and boy does the USR need to keep it alive

The state of Earth: Earth is the mostly ocean home planet of humanity, most of human history has occurred on Earth, and most of humanity's population is centered around Earth and its single moon, Luna. Earth is a battered planet, kept on life support by humanity, 40% of the land has been converted to urban sprawls, 50% is purely agricultural land, dedicated solely to growing massive fields of crops, and the final 10% is solely dedicated to ecological re-building and wildlife ranches. the majority of industry has been moved off world to Luna or Mars, in fact, almost no industry besides biotech and agricultural industries have been moved off Earth in an effort to reduce their effects on the planet and to dedicate more of the already small amounts of landmasses Earth has to agriculture and living space. Earth is 75% semi-polluted oceans, the other 25% being landmasses. half of all Terran animal and plant species have gone extinct, the other half are either preserved in captivity or have adapted to life on a forever-changed planet. The largest non-human animal population is the brown rat, a common pest species that has plagued humanity since the first farms, it's also been domesticated as a pet and an emergency food source. Earth's largest export is de-salinated sea water, the 2nd largest export is Terran soil and complex biologicals
