Era of discovery, which started in 15th century, had many consequences: good and bad alike. It expanded European knowledge of the world, but this often came with conquest of indigenous peoples. A combination of ambition, navigational prowess and advanced naval architecture catapulted Spain and Portugal to premier Western powers.
Caravel was the harbinger of the era of discovery. But little is known about it: size, capabilities and other aspects are still uncertain, in part because they so varied between different ships. What is known and revealed is that the ship outclassed its contemporaries due to its highly adaptive characteristics. These were shallow draught, speed, maneuverability, and ability to sail close to the wind. As a result, it was an ideal ship for reconnaissance along African shoreline, as well as voyages to the New World.
