Celebrate Tolkien Reading Day!

Incanus

Well, I can see why 3/25 would be a Tolkien reading day.

For myself, I've been celebrating for the last month or two. I'd been kind of avoiding Tolkien while I developed my own work, because LotR is the first (adult) book I ever picked up and read. I think the amount of influence he has on me is about where it should be.

I've been re-reading the books containing the early drafts of LotR, and it is quite fascinating. I also picked up the Oxford Blackwell Companion to J.R.R. Tolkien--a book of 36 collected essays by language and literature scholars. Neat stuff--I'm about 2/3 through it.

As big a fan as I am, I don't want my works to be derivative of his. Other than they are both epic fantasies, that is.
