Character Bio - Twitch

Spoiler-free character bio (questionaire based) for Dr. Sprocketsworth ‘Twitch’ Hammercog, Jr.

Name: Dr. Sprocketsworth ‘Twitch’ Hammercog, Jr.

Age: 30

General physical description: Twitch is a gnome, the smallest of people in the world of Ethuria. Standing at 2’6” tall, he’s short even by Gnomish standards. Small patches of white hair shoot up from his scalp, standing straight up and appearing stiff. Twitch has had extensive work done to rebuild his body after a few lab accidents while he was perfecting work on some of his inventions. Because of these accidents, a large portion of the right side of his body has been replaced with metallic parts. His right eye has what appears to be a single goggle over it, which can telescope, providing a greater distance view or for inspection of items close up if he needs. His entire right arm has been replaced with a mechanical replica, complete with working fingers. His jaw, also, had to be replaced with a mechanical version. Because of this, he prefers to keep the lower half of his face hidden, and nearly always wears a dirty blue scarf that he keeps wrapped around his neck and up to his nose. Twitch’s nose is likely his most defining feature, large and pointed it sticks out from just above his scarf and dominates his otherwise small face.

Hometown: Twitch is from the giant floating city of Mechanopolis. Currently, however, he lives in Port Verdenfall – the largest city on the western coast of the Western Continent, and the first place most ships from the Western Wilds will dock.

Type of home/ neighborhood: Twitch makes his home above his workshop. He maintains a clockwork shop on the first floor of his modest building, he offers repair and sales services for watches, clocks, and other gizmos of Gnomish design. This shop helps to fund his research and experiments, which he conducts in a small workshop in his back room.

Relationship status: Single

Current family: Parents, multiple younger siblings

Family background (parents, previous marriages, etc.):
• Eldest child of Councilmember Sprocketsworth Hammercog Sr. and his wife Professor Annaluel Hammercog.
• Councilmember Sprocketsworth Hammercog Sr is a leading member of the Mechanopolis Parliament – the ruling body of Gnomish government
• Professor Annaluel Hammercog is the foremost authority on mechano-magical engineering, and also serves as a research fellow at the Mechanopolis University.
• Little brother (x2), Little sister (x1)

Friends: Because of his injuries, Twitch is an outsider that tends to keep to himself. However, he is a favorite with the locals because of his kindly nature as well as his propensity to blow himself up in comical fashion accidently. He is also the only Gnome is Port Verdenfall, which makes him an attraction amongst local children.

Other close relationships: None currently.

Relationship with men: Twitch tends to get along with everyone, although his small stature can make him skittish around ‘big’uns’

Relationship with women: Twitch tends to get along with everyone, although his small stature can make him skittish around ‘big’uns’

Job: Inventor, Scientist, Doctor

Dress style: Twitch’s dress style is intensely peculiar. While most Gnomes have at least a basic sense of (human) fashion and go along with it, Twitch has never been truly ‘normal.’ He consistently wears the same thing every day, prompting questions of whether it is the only set of clothing he owns, or if he just has multiple copies of it. His dress consists of a pair of workboots which he constantly keeps laced as tightly as possible utilizing a strange knot ‘of his own design’ that so far none have been able to duplicate; black denim pants with both belt and suspenders; a dark blue button down shirt (usually stained with some type of grease); and a large brown overcoat that has multiple loops and interior pockets. In the pockets of his overcoat he keeps a variety of tools for any occasion he may find himself in: a small pocket knife; a miniaturized elctrospanner; and his personal favorite tool, a ‘recoilless screwdriver’ that he designed himself – according to Twitch he can ‘hammer a nail, pick a lock, effectively neuter an angry Chimera, and when necessary be used as an actual screwdriver.’

Religion: Believes in the Gods

Attitude to religion: Believes the Gods exist, or at least did exist, but that like any good scientist they allow their experiment to conduct itself instead of interfering.

Favorite pastimes: Fixing things, invention

Hobbies: Invention, experimentation, all around tinkering

Favorite sports: Due to his size, Twitch is not good at any sports. He does, however, despise one the big’uns play called ‘Gnome Punting.’

Favorite foods: Twitch had duck once, that was really good.

Strongest positive personality trait:
• Loyalty. Twitch will stick by a friend’s side to the very end.
• Innovation. If there’s a problem, Twitch will analyze it to death, and then he’ll try to solve it.
22. Strongest negative personality trait:
• Skittish. Twitch’s small stature as well as his physical deformities have made him slightly jumpy.
• Overanalytical. Twitch tends to plan, consider the plan, and then plan some more. Off-the-cuff is not his forte.

Sense of humor: Twitch has an odd sense of humor stemming from his genius intellect and the effects of some of the injuries he’s sustained over the years. Many times he’ll begin laughing at some perceived joke that he had going over in his head without sharing it with the group.

Temper: Extremely long-tempered. Twitch nearly never gets angry.

Consideration for others: He believes that everyone is useful, and more than anything wants to help create something good for the world.

How other people see him/her: An eccentric little man.

Opinion of him/herself: He sees himself as someone who tries to make things better.

Other traits, especially those to be brought out in story: The nickname ‘Twitch’ stems from seizures that he has due to the electrical components of his mechanical body parts. He developed the science himself but unfortunately has never perfected it, because of that sometimes the electrical signals that his nervous system generates and get interpreted by the mechanical body parts back-feed into the system, causing seizures or a ‘Twitch.’ It will also sometimes interrupt his speech pattern causing him to repeat a word a few times.

Ambitions: As the foremost authority on aero-aquatic engineering (something he invented), Twitch hopes to one day find someone willing to test one of his inventions on their ship.

Philosophy of life: Never stop creating, and always give a hand to those who need it.

Most important thing to know about this character: Twitch was thrown out of Mechanopolis after an experiment went awry, causing a portion of the City to sink. He was the only one injured, leading to the deformities he has today. Although nobody was killed, the Gnomish government decided that Twitch’s experiments, and Twitch himself, were too dangerous to allow to remain on the floating City and they deported him. He can return to visit, but he must not take up permanent residence or conduct any more experiments.

Will readers like or dislike this character, and why? Readers will love Twitch. He’s the comic relief many times, but at the same time his heart, determination, and unfailing optimism will be the uplift that some readers need when the world around them is falling apart. As the second most important character in the series, Twitch has a lot to do, and the entire second book will be from his point of view.
