Black Panther (spoilmonger)

Along with the challenge, when someone says they are King, and the trusted counsel in the room kind of look like that may be in question, and in fact they have a big fight, and all the blue flowers get destroyed and people die and all that....

Just sayin', what I would expect to follow next would be called by astute news type people, a purge.

It looked to me like T'Challa wanted to avoid the fight but felt like he had to when Killmonger revealed his royal lineage to the other tribe leaders.

Well, he probably did want to avoid the fight. That was my reading too... But claiming a royal lineage is not enough to have a claim to depose a sitting King, and his lineage was not strong enough anyway, he was the son of the brother of the king, not the son of the former king.

One of the things a lot of Marvel movies have consistently struggled with is weak villains

I've noticed that in most of these movies, the villain is usually a reverse rendition of the hero. Hulk vs bigger hulk, Iron man vs bigger Iron man, Superman vs Zod... In this, they follow that model as well. I think it must be some type of required introduction aspect of the hero. Its like, before he can be a real hero, he must defeat his more evil self. Not sure if that is really at play, but I have noticed it.

There are many, many forms of kingship. I remember the story line from the comics and never had a problem with it. Maybe take away the word "king". Call him war chief, or chief, or just clan leader. Your position can be challenged at any time, and that's what Killmonger does. I'm just jazzed to have this movie. I was a big fan of the 1970s comic.

The origin is as much about the superpower as it is about the hero. Superman and Zod are both from Krypton. Iron Man and Iron Monger use the same arc reactor energy source. Black Panther and Killmonger both took the same flower power and ruled the same Vibranium-tech kingdom. Ant-Man and Yellowjacket use a suit based on the same particles. And so on. Spider-Man and Batman are the greats in part because they get around this problem. The genetic device in Spidey-land can be calibrated to different animals (spider vs. lizard), so they tackled the power-duplicate in a more awesome way with venom (not in the movie, though). And Batman doesn't have a superpower, so the origin can focus on the villain.

Killmonger, though, had a pretty wicked arc and backstory that really puts him apart from some of the others that just want to profit from the new power.

Well, if I had read the comic, I probably would have raised questions about the comic as well, but you know...it is what it is. My issue is mostly that Black Panther has already assumed the mantle of King, and in so doing becomes the vessel of the Black Panthers power. After that fact, he should not be required to put that power aside every time some one decides to issue a formal challenge for the throne. Challenges to the throne will always be a possibility, but they would thereafter have to come while he is super powered. Its seems kind of silly to give that up so the usurper has a better chance. You can tell the story a million ways, they just chose to tell it that way. It gets me asking questions is all. But that is one scene of many. I was asking questions throughout.

The Venom story is pretty cool, but I would put Spiderman still in Batman's shadow. Venom is better than Manbat though...
