Got told AI did a better job than me.

I know logically such a thing shouldn't bother me, both on the account of AI (ew) and someone's criticism, but i have to admit, this one hurts. A lot.
Basically I was talking about some of my story ideas that I'm using, and idk if it was a bot that does it automatically, or just someone using AI for a thing, but they took my list and "made" prompts from my story ideas, which tbf I did put out into the world for people to use. I saw people talking about having trouble with story ideas and no idea is original so i just out out a bunch of mine in case they caught anyone's eye.

Anyway, the comment to that was along the lines of, "Damn, the AI did a better job than Op making story ideas! "

I know it's stupid to let this effect me but jesus christ that one stings. Especially when I already have issues with not being great at some of the only things I'm good at and being told AI of all things is doing better T-T

I don't even know how to come back from this. I'm already dealing with being in a depressive episode and this was just a gut punch to that whole thing even if I know I shouldn't. Yall ever deal with this bullshit? ToT

First, i would avoid anyone using AI. They are not on a path to excellence. They are on a path to letting the robot do it for them.

Second. AI is going to write better than us all one day. Its inevitable.

Third. Fuck them!

Fourth. It dont matter what others say. You need to write whats in you and get it out.

Lesson learned, dont give your ideas to anyone. Guard them like a magician does their tricks.

I know logically that I should let this slide off me, I think part of the reason has been my depression mindset that I'm trying to work through. But like, getting told AI of all things was better was an actual slap in the face holy crap lol As for ideas I feel like I'm on the other side, specifically when I was saying what they where it was because I knew I had spent a long time on them and if say, you and I where to write a story with the same idea starting point they would be different. No idea is original and whats important is how we write it and all that. I think I just needed a small vent with some people who might understand why I'm upset about the situation. You're right though, thank you. I shouldn't let what they say affect me so much lol

I completely agree, fuck them!

AI lacks the ingenuity and free thinking necessary for real storytelling. People who believe AI can replace art truly underestimate the imagination of even completely novice authors, painters and crafters.
Right?!? But that's partly why it stung so much.
AI?!? This dude is gonna sit here and say the AI did better than me?!!? Actual physical assault on my life with one sentence lol

Don't let it discourage you. AI can't replace you or the effort you put in. AI is basically just stealing the idea's and material of other author's so if it accidentally makes something readable it's because of people like you who create original idea's.

Man, it makes me sad when people say sit like that not even understanding what they're talking about 🥺

I have spent months creating my novel an if somebody said that to me I'd be very down as well.

Just want to say, lest I leave a bad impression, but the use of sentence enhancers, such as swear words, are not in the character of the site. We should use them sparingly. I thought it was the appropriate response here, but I dont want to start something ;)

What complete moron would even say somthing like that? If they prefer entertainment by AI, then I wish them good luck, let them go and read AI-generated stories and we'll see them back when they realize that the tenth story they read is still the same reguritated mindless drool as the first.
Says more about them & their understandig of art, than it could ever say about you.

Mainly people who doesn't read much and/or have never created anything themselves so they believe that if the AI is better then them the AI is better then everyone.

Because as we all know, no one can be better then a person judging blindly.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you probably ran into the one scenario where AI does a decent job. As a glorified auto-complete engine, AI is very good at quickly taking a sentence or an idea and expanding on it. So as such, an AI is ideally designed to take a small story idea and within seconds spit out a dozen writing prompts of whatever length you ask for. They'll be pretty generic. However, for prompts they're ideal.

AI should be better at this than pretty much anyone out there, simply because a computer can expand on a random thought much faster and in more detail than a human could. It's what the thing was designed to do. It can simply give you a 500 word idea within seconds based on the prompt and ideas stolen from random other stories.

What it doesn't give you is quality (which is very much dependent on your input) or anything resembling decent prose.

So you're saying Hallmark movies are written by AI? /Silly

I second the opinion that any company willing to replace human employees with AI to cut costs is not worth your time.

In the writing sphere you're going to run into all sorts of personalities with something to say about you or about something you created. Some will be worth listening to. Others will not be worth the air spent to tell them to sit on a bag of dick-shaped tacks.

Some can be tough, but fair. Some can be kind and thoughtful. Then, there are those who seem to like being mean. Pity these meanies, because they must have something rotten and miserable inside of them that they want to spread around.

You did something to be helpful and nice. Be proud of that.

AI are master snipe artists. They don’t think of human ingenuity, just…maybe if it was weighed up with some valuable criticism, then the AI human comment would…it makes me wonder where we were going, if the artists integrity is taken away from them.

Actually, I would like to reassure you that this will never happen, and it will never happen because of the way LLMs are trained. AI writing is only as good as its input, and its input is the totality of writing available on the internet. All the terrible, barely-started stories on sites like fanfiction.net and AO3 go into it and lower its writing quality. That's not even including the fact that there is now so much AI slop floating around that finding new, uncontaminated training data for the AIs is becoming a problem for AI devs.
