I did read lotr only because the movies were coming and 'now or never'.

Why did you feel you had to read them because the movies were coming out? Why feel the need to read them at all?

I was holding back for a long time because of my aversion to 'books you have to read'. I wanted to read them because I was curious but afraid.
The problem with a movie is you get the images printed in your head. The "director's cut" of how the characters are supposed to be. So for me, reading the books after the movie doesn't work as well. While the movies are good, I am glad I did manage to read first and create my own images.

There are books I never finished and could enjoy the movie but it is very rare. Foundation comes to mind. Many people do like the books but I'm not one of them. I know it is also a sci-fi classic. I didn't even finish the book.

This spark is the answer to the question. Whatever the inner motivation, it was there. If it were not there, wandering a fantasy writer site would not be something one would do. If there is no curiosity towards fantasy, and the craft, there is no reason join a fantasy writers site. If you do not have any curiosity about LOTR, I would question any true interest in the art. You cannot get here without knowing of that.

I do not know why I am here, to be honest I don't think I fit in here but not because there is stuff I did or did not read or movies I did not watch.

PS: I don't know why I am here either. I think there are certainly people here I would not really fit in with. But there is not other reason needed than, I want to be. We are glad to have you here.

Since you mentioned the Shining, I also haven't seen any Stephen King adaptation, and never want to.

I want to see it because people meme on the Steven King version. At least on the internet.

Maybe the few friends I've had just weren't big film buffs. I've never seen any of the major horror movies either.
