My work is as much M/M or F/F romance as fantasy, so my target audience expects 'adult material.' I think you should figure out who your target audience is, what they generally expect in the specific genre they read, and then figure out whether you can (or should) play with those boundaries.
Hi SashaMerideth!
Have you considered marketing this among more than one niche? I write mostly M/M and F/F stories. The book my writing partner and I are working on now will work primarily for the M/M crowd, but judging by what some straight readers have told me, it will work with some of the...
To me, the big news about Pottermore is that J.K. Rowling is finally selling her Harry Potter series as e-books (that will, thankfully, be compatible with Kindle)--and that she's doing it on her own and has therefore "sidelined the publishing industry" as one agent's blog post puts it. We'll see...
Welcome, Cicadagrrl!
I love your name--probably because I love cicadas. Listening to them rattling is a high point of ever summer for me. I'm guessing you have a thing for them too?
I love, love, love stories where enemies can't help but give each other a grudging respect--and can't help but feel an attraction.
I think there are lots of ways you can show affection between two enemies, or two people who are supposed to be enemies but can't seem to manage it. Perhaps they...
I think this question depends on three things:
1. Your genre
2. Your target audience
3. What you hope to accomplish with an erotic scene--in other words, how does the scene move the story forward?
The story my writing partner and I are working on is an M/M romance as well as fantasy...
True, but you can give these readers the extra information they crave without clogging up your story. I think it's a grand idea for fantasy authors to host a website with all the nitty details of their world, or even to publish an atlas and such if the demand is high enough. But I don't think...
Well put. I love world-building, and my writing partner and I are putting a 'bible' together for our world--but I don't want to inflict every last detail on our readers! I think we need to know the world inside-out; they don't.
Absolutely!
My experience of collaboration has been entirely positive: I think I've found the ideal writing partner. Alexandra and I have a lot in common--we're both nice Jewish girls living in the greater New York City area, we both have the same tastes in books and TV, and we're both...
Thanks Black Dragon!
The story we're working on at the moment is called Sons of Obsidian--it features a black dragon who is, technically speaking, the absolute monarch of Halcrest, the main city-state. (Practically speaking Obsidian allows a human king and elected Assembly to rule in his...
Pathfinder is a tweaked, house-rulish version of 3.5, generally giving more options and a bit more power to each character. It streamlines a couple of things (the 3.5 skills Balance, Jump and Tumble are all covered by one skill called Acrobatics; Spot and Listen are both covered under...
