When to start an Author Site

I don't see why this has to be chicken-or-the-egg. Why can't you simply set up the site WHEN you publish, or at least are about to? That way it can say "'title of book' COMING *date*!" to help create hype for it's release.

Free online writing course starting October

I took the first version of this in the spring. It is somewhat helpful, but there's nothing there that you can't learn this summer by watching Youtube channels like the Brandon Sanderson lectures and Ellen Brock's channel — not to mention the Novel Boot Camp series on her blog. Pair that with a...

Scrivener Software: to use or not?

Scrivener has you covered. There's a feature in the righthand sidebar called "snapshots" that'll save a version of your draft exactly as it is, and then you can just write over your current file, knowing you can revert back at any time, without ever leaving the project file, or moving things in...

GoT Season 4 [NO SPOILERS, PLEASE]

I agree with everything in this post. Throughout this season, I kept telling myself, "don't fall in love with this character, he'll be dead before episode ten" but it was SO HARD not to! I was yelling at him as I watched the fight to cool it down and just kill Clegaine, already! Unfortunately...

    Stephen King's "On Writing"

So many people have mentioned this book to me recently. I'm going to have to pick up a copy. Not a big King fan, though I like a few of his books, but there seems to be a consensus that this book is a go-to for writing mechanics.

    Mind Readers as Viewpoint Characters

My first thought upon reading this thread was of many characters in Mercedes Lackey's Valgarth books. Lots of them are mind readers, but in order not to be reduced to mush, as mentioned earlier in the thread, they learn to put up mental barriers to keep others thoughts out unless the mind reader...

Writers' notebooks: 'A junkyard of the mind'

Just for fun, I signed up for, and am participating in, the MOOC Start Writing Fiction by the Open University UK. The course also encourages a writer's notebook, and in fact, several of the assignments (particularly the early ones) are supposed to be done using said notebook. Now, in all...

    Hello!

I would like to take the opportunity to say hello to all here! I found this site via twitter (I'm @KristeneCollins in case anyone wants to know) and I would like to say that I love the idea of a genre-specific website where I can learn what others are up to and hopefully make some like-minded...
