I certainly plan to continue writing my NaNo story after the month is over, as I mentioned in the other thread. I think it's got a lot of great elements in it, and some good characters, and some awesome scenes, so there is a good groundwork for a real story there, and best of all, I've thought...
As of today I'm at 44064 words. Not too bad considering that I am, by my estimation, a little less than half done with the story as a whole. Still, 50k will be no problem, and I plan to keep writing as far into December and beyond as it takes to finish the story.
Welcome from another newbie! I sort of feel like a gate-crasher running up to open the door for another gate-crasher, but so be it.
Fortunately, we all now know where the loo is, we just need to find the punch...
Great article Phil! I especially like point #4. How About, Like, Make Something Happen.
It's totally key to remember that you are the master of your own story, not vice versa. If you feel like a scene is dragging, or like your protagonist is going nowhere, change it up!
This was happening to...
I'd totally be willing to read that. Obviously, the better written it is, the more I'd want to read it.
It's not easy to make multiple 1st person viewpoints compelling, partly because you, as a writer, will need to make their voices very distinct from each other so that the reader will be...
Howdy! It seems to me that if you're writing REALLY fantastic descriptions then you have a certain amount of leeway in terms of writing long ones.
The only thing I would say is that at a certain point I think you have to sacrifice description for pacing, or like you say, people will get sick...
Thanks for the welcome, everyone! My own strangest job was not, perhaps, all that strange really. I did high-rise window washing for about two weeks at one point. After two weeks and cleaning the windows on a five story Holiday Inn while sitting on a board that dangled at the end of a rope, I...
Woo! Violence! Ahem.
So far it seems like the main statement about violence is: use it if you think it's audience appropriate, and when you use it, do it because it's complementing your story and/or building the atmosphere you want to convey.
I write a good bit of epic fantasy-style work...
Oh man, I just imagined 1000 robot monkeys line-dancing around a bemused midget... Wow.
Thanks for the replies guys, I'm looking forward to reading what you all have posted, and to posting some of my own work. Right now I'm in the midst of NaNoWriMo, which is a first draft where I don't even...
How are you gentlemen? (Also, how are you ladies? Zero Wing was totally sexist.)
So, I am currently at 23,452 words, although a few of those are actually just line-breaks... let's say 23,400 actual words. I have somehow managed to write 2,000 or more words per day since Nov 1. Except this one...
Hello! If you are reading this, then you are probably bored. Consider the following mental image for your entertainment: a midget fighting 1000 robot monkeys.
That said, I am Nathan. I heard about the Mythic Scribes community from the fine folks on the Roundtable Podcast, and I thought I...
