    Writing dialogue for groups

Is there a trick to this I don't know? Unless the conversation is brief and to the point I find the x said, y asked, z said and so on feels very clunky. Is it just a matter of editing until it feels right (which is what I've done in the past) or is there special secret I don't know about?

    Moving from Concept to Plot

Umm... I just started writing. 18 months later I had a book. No plot or anything in writing except a list of names and places which, now I'm writing the sequel I can't find. This is probably not how it should be done

    A Minefield Full of Penguins

I released my first book, A Minefield Full of Penguins back in October and I have to say it's had a better response than I ever dared hope. I just need to sell a few more copies. It's a contemporary fantasy set in Britain and... well, I don't want to spoil it for you but it's in the same vein...

    Creating a believable villain

I wrote this when my protagonist first met the book's main villains for the first time. He has, of course been taken prisoner (who am I to argue with a standard fantasy trope). The Captain just wants to get the job done but his sidekick, he's a nutter... The Captain eyed his sidekick up, uneasy...

Is having a young Protagonist... unrealistic?

It all depends how you write your story. Read some of the more famous children's books, see how the likes of CS Lewis, J K Rowling and Terry Pratchett deal with young protagonists. Tiffany Aching from the Terry Pratchett Discworld books started saving the world when she was 9 with a frying pan...

    Help with current novel?

This happened to me, I got half way through my first novel and realised the story wasn't going anywhere and I was trying to cram too much in. In the end I cut 30,000 words (sob) moved a battle scene from the middle of the book to the end and the ending I'd originally planned is now the ending to...

Tell me about your non-Medieval Europe based settings.

My books are mostly set in a prehistoric style world so lots of big scary (weird) creatures, human technology is around the early industrial revolution level (ok maybe a bit of steampunk snuck in while I wasn't looking) and the relatively small human population is spread along one massive river.

    Fleshing Out a Religion

There's a famous saying that if you want to study God, you study science. If you want to study man, you study religion. A religion may start out with one goal or outlook in mind but over time culture changes, the priests have to maintain their grip on a fickle audience ("Thou shalt not subject...

    Hello Scribes

Hello all. I'm Trevor, I live in the UK, have five kids, a full time job and a wonderful wife who doesn't quite understand what this writing lark's all about (come to that, I'm not exactly sure either but I'm having fun.) I write and read mostly fantasy, preferably with a contemporary twist. I'm...
