    'Grey' characters. Also 'mysterious stranger' kind of characters. Examples of those I've liked - Dirk in Jennifer Fallon's 'Second Sons' trilogy. Bran in Juliet Mariller's Son of the Shadows. Kelsier in the Mistborn trilogy.
