#53 in my 100 Faces Project -- Robert Downey Jr. Although not as painterly as #52, I feel this one has a much stronger likeness. Btw, if you have suggestions for faces I should try, please feel free to let me know. I'm alternating between men and women, but I'm also trying to get the widest...

    Vielmond's Works

Thanks for all the tips. I took a run at it last night and you can see the result in this thread. Obviously more practice is needed, but it was really fun to just let myself be rough and not obsess over a bazillion Photoshop layers.

#52 in my 100 Faces Project -- the likeness isn't as strong as I would like, but it's Emma Swan from the TV series, "Once Upon a Time". I took a bit of a run at a different Photoshop style on this one and tried to incorporate some of Vielmond's suggestions to capture a more painterly look.

I'll second that! I'm actually really interested in what sorts of Photoshop brushes you use for your technique. A lot of what I've done so far comes out looking quite soft--an uber-airbrush sort of look which is okay, but I'm not super wild about. What I really like about your stuff is that...

Thanks. :) That would be Sir Stumpy. He was the star of my demo reel when I went to animation school once upon a long time ago. These days he's kind of my personal mascot. He's the little guy who is all about perseverance.

Have You Finished Your Holiday Shopping?

I live within walking distance of the biggest mall in the province. For myself, I make a point of getting all my shopping done before December 1st so that I can avoid it until after New Years... but then I'll get the urge to go to the mall, buy a hot chocolate and people-watch the ensuing insanity.

The 9-to-5 grind has been suitably grind-y the last little while, but my hope for 2014 is to carve out a little more space for creative pursuits. These are a couple of my latest digital pieces -- the first one being a promo banner I've been using for my blog... ...and this is a quick...

killing the dreams of the teenage traveller

Mm, I don't want to let things get too complicated here. She's essentially a potential teenage runaway whose family is choosing very poor options to keep her under their thumb, ostensibly for her own good. I was reading up on parenting advice on my commute today, (I don't have kids), and the...

killing the dreams of the teenage traveller

Hmm, yes I suspected the money thing could be problematic. The thing I really want to convey with this character is her independence... this notion that the only way she feels like she can feel strong and empowered is to push everyone away and just run... get as far from everyone as...

It's been awhile since I've posted anything, but I did a Illustration for Picture Book class earlier this year. These are a couple pieces that came out of it. I had to laugh at the idea of me doing yet another Little Red Riding Hood piece, but that was the assignment. If I were to do it...

Love the painterly, gritty quality of your style. A lot of pro-stuff I see feels overly polished and artificial, but this has that great hand-made feel to it even though it's done in Photoshop.

Mistborn - Does It Take a While to Get into It?

I haven't read Mistborn, but if it's anything like the author's first book in the Stormlight Archive series, "The Way of Kings"... well, I wouldn't have been able to get through that one if I hadn't been listening to it as an audiobook on my commute. It took a very, very long time before I felt...

killing the dreams of the teenage traveller

I'm currently feeling my way around a scenario for a story. It's important to note that while the majority of the story is traditional fantasy, the scenario I'm talking about here is very much in our world. I've got a 17 year old girl who has lived in a small town all her life. For a variety...

water-motif -- trying to find a name for something

The way I'm envisioning it is that magic exist outside the physical world and that a magic-user would draw from it in order to use it in greater or lesser degrees depending on their abilities. In using the magic they themselves are the portal between the physical world and that other more...

water-motif -- trying to find a name for something

Haha. Drainpipe is kinda awesome. "By the breath of the Creator, wizard! The plumbing of our world has become befouled!!" but no... :) I find I keep coming back to the idea of perhaps just using "The Well" for both in and out. You can draw from a well, but there's also a sense of depth...
