theoretically, how would you kill a god?

In the Journey to the West, the gods attempt to kill Sun Wukong in various ways. One involved the " god execution block", which presumably did work on ocassion. But this rIses a basic question: WHO is trying to kill a god?

If I was to kill a God, I would add another god or immortal, that isn't necessarily stronger but is more evil and tactical. And would lure the god into a trap. And then maybe, the god is technically unkilleable, but it could be torn up or cut up into so many pieces (by some process that needs elaboration.. maybe by his own weapon?) and kept from reassembling, that it becomes powerless. So then there is a gods' mouth, gods' eye, gods' hand scattered helplessly in the universe. Or.. maybe the god could be driven to commit suicide? Because the one thing this god loves is destroyed?

I wouldn't say that the god absolutely has to have an evil counterpart, planning to overthrow them.
I've played quite a few RPG where the populace have simply become discontent with how things are being run.
The god of course spends much of the game mocking them and calling them insects, until plot armor kicks in and they get bonked.
Fire emblem does it. at least twice I think
Xenoblade LOVES to do it.
Tales Of series does it a few times.
Final Fantasy is a whole madhouse full of this trope.

In a great Fantasy RPG game called Pillars of Eternity, they come together and create a superweapon to do it, but the process curses the land.

yup, you saw that correctly. Im trying to figure out how I should kill some of my divine(given that some of them are antagonists), and I would like some input.

currently, I have that you take their divine power away somehow and that its related to their divine weapon, but that's all. also, my divine have multiple forms that can be killed individually.
What is the source of god's power? Is it internal or external? If it is internal, well, maybe a divine weapon can hurt gods as it is made by gods? If it is external, removing source of power (e.g. belief / believers) may work.

the source is basically a special form of magic made and harnessed by the six main divine. its basically a combined version of all things that magic can do.

Well, in that case, remove either the magic or the harnessing system.
wait bro thank you.. just thought of ANOTHER change because of this post

so the magic IS the divine weapon and to kill the divinity you destroy the weapon, BUT they will simply revert to their form before ascension so you still have to actually kill them and their entire lifespan is reset too so if you fail they can simply become divinity again lol... (sorry bout the rant)

if it’s tied to specifically their weapons & taking it makes them lose their divine power then, throw in a bit of chaos, toss another god into the mix & that helps even the playing field. After the battle if the characters are powerful enough they can swoop in & finish whatever god is left alive.

What if it works like a vaccine does? The weapon to kill a god can be made from the remaining essence of a different, fallen god. God stuff could be necessary to kill gods.

already done with the ten divine guardians I talked about. I also have villains that are ALMOST gods, ARE gods, or STRONGER than gods.

Hm...
Can this God read minds? Perhaps the protagonist could somehow overpower their brain activity? :ninja: (I have no idea; it's just the first thing that came to my mind)
Is there perhaps a potion/item that can prevent a God from healing? Or a weapon that can mortally wound a God?

Maybe have your god go through a metamorphosis, a transcendence of a sort, where he goes in hibernation or becomes dormant. Then have a rival god kill him while he is vulnerable...

Final Fantasy is a whole madhouse full of this trope.
They prayed for mercy, but the god was engrossed in his own great work and deaf to their cries. Outraged, the faithful turned to forbidden rites: they bartered and shackled their souls to black sorcery, forming a desperate pact with the god’s enemies. Together they schemed to unmake the god who had abandoned them.

The people worshipped their god, but the god was too busy with his own affairs to listen. Furious at being ignored, some of them turned to black magic — risking and binding their own souls — and plotted, with the help of the god’s rivals, to destroy him.

Humans worship their god only when they are in need but the very thing they pray for is often what gets destroyed.
And still, the god does not see their suffering. Their faith turns to rage.
Their prayers turn to curses.
In desperation, they turn to forbidden dark magic a power so strong it binds not only their enemies, but also their own allies,
forcing their own team to serve the ritual’s purpose. And in the shadows, they become what they once feared the rivals of their own god, masters of forbidden magic, bent on ending the divinity that betrayed them.
