Tall Dwarfs...

So, gigantism is an actual thing in real life.

I was wondering if a fun way to depict this in a fantasy setting would be to have tall dwarfs.

It should be noted that one of them will more than likely be 'too tall to be a regular dwarf but a little short to be seen as human'

Well one character in particular. Some of the other tall dwarfs will be human sized pretty much cause they're half human. The Samurai who's in the 'middle' of the spectrum is half human too but he takes more after his dwarf mother. (Who yes, was also a samurai)

One could always have an adopted human who thinks he's a dwarf, like Carrot Ironfoundersson in the Discworld novels. And Moorcock had a 'dwarf giant' (i.e. giant with dwarfism) in one of the tales.

Tall dwarves could be a useful way to showcase to readers how the dwarves differ from humans, besides their height. Perhaps the tall dwarf's head, brow, hands and feet could be abnormally large. Perhaps their chest and shoulders could be twice as wide. Overdeveloped traps, deeply sunken eyes, inhumanly rough and dense hair, or who knows what else.

This was my thinking too.
My Dwarves have unimaginable strength (even compared to my martial arts loving race ) so they wouldn't fit in the 'frame' of a normal human.

I could give them dwarven traits too. Common ones I see are big round noses and unusually fuzzy eyebrows. And the big hands you talked about. Maybe the male dwarves take after Tanuki, let's uhhh just leave it at that. /silly

There's a story / series I saw that only got one movie. (I forget the name) It featured a human sized dwarf who got very upset when it was brought up. I liked the idea that the dwarves eat the dirt/minerals but uh...maybe not so much the other bit. (That this was how they dug and the debris came out the other end...)

I would suspect Dwarves would be subject to difference in height, and gene mutation as any other species, so...a rare larger one should/could happen.

And size is kind of relative. If one is a giant, does not everything look like a dwarf?

I'd say it can happen, within reason, but...too much and I wonder why we are bothering to call them dwarves.

I agree on this, there can be small giants and tall dwarves, particularly when half human-other species ness is involved.

I have a giant who appears pretty early. She calls human sized characters 'tinies'

She's used it both as a endearing term and as a 'ahem' sexy term. (like trying to taunt them) The boys in the group realize she's being sarcastic right away though.

Both of the boys in the group are wise enough to resist her temptations. Which is one of the reasons they befriend her so easily. To be fair the people she worked with at the time didn't have the best moral compasses. At the point she meets the protags in the story. She was getting 'fed up' with working for the desert bandits. (for some obvious reasons besides the bandits treating her like a tool) She actually becomes fast friends with one of the ladies in the group. When the protagonists encourage her to 'walk' and an opportunity arises she's more than happy to take it. What are the bandits gonna do to stop her? lol

Yeah I'm deciding on how tall to make them. I want them to be taller than a dwarf obviously, but how tall I'm not sure. Probably in the middle ground between a human and a dwarf.
