So about my 'style' of writing...

This isn't about my 'voice' or whatever, but my method of deciding when to 'finish' writing for the evening.
Generally I don't 'force' myself to keep writing until I reach a certain point?
I write until either A:I feel like I've made progress or B: my 40 minutes on my timer is up.
Some nights I make more progress than others, but, I think writing until I feel sated I guess? is a good thing.

I kinda wonder if ya'll have any quirks like this.

I like writing about the same time each night. It is called being a night owl. That is what my mother used to say. There are times when it is appropriate, some when it is not. I sway to the side of night time, because it gives me time to think, and I am not overburdened.

When it comes to brainstorming and planning, this can be done at any time, for me. I have a good memory for plot and word structure. Names, not so much, but I can come up with a decent couple. The times at which most brainstorming is done, is early morning, when I am remembering the events of the night time past.

What time the characters experience, is as fickle as their sleep cycle. And I experience different emotions in their stead. It can be a solitary moment at their bed time, or a moment of respite when eating a meal. There is the quiet time and the loud time - which can happen night or day.

This is basically me too, story/character ideas throughout the day (sometimes at the most awkward times...) and then write at night, when I've done most of my daily routine if not all of it.

My only issue with ideas, they come to me in the form of character interaction scenes, I know all scenes are character interaction but you know what I mean. Characters just chatting during down time moments.

I've set my writing alarm to be 9:30 because if I do it at 10:30 I'm either too sleepy or too distracted by 'finishing' my night time routine.

I think routine matters.

For me, I enjoy working out the next scenes in my story during my commute period. And then writing them at night...

Only, my routine is greatly fouled up. Now I dont have such a long drive to work, and at home, the wife, who used to religiously go to be at 10 PM, is now staying up to midnight or later, so...I cant outlast them anymore. And so, to get my writing time in, I am usually up to 2 or 3 AM.

My last novel, I wrote mostly at work, but that was because work was slow. Now its jumping, so I can get a routine going there either.

The end, my writing suffers. But, I am working on getting book 2 out the door. I figure thats enough for right now.

I am not sure when I will get a working routine again, but it is on my mind a lot. I definitely want to get book 5 much further along. I want it to get its legs and start telling itself. Right now, I am just writing 'setting the table' kind of scenes.

However, when I write, I like to write to the end of the current scene, but I make no promises that I will. I go to bed when my eyes get bleary. And I often look at my scenes in two categories, Scenes that show the story I want to tell, and connecting scenes. I struggle with the connecting ones. They actually tend to end up being my favs, but they are hard to get out on paper.

So it goes for a lonely dragon trying to find time to type in his cave.

If I'm on a roll I'll write until 3 or 4 AM. Why limit yourself? Its supposed to be an enjoyable experience.
