What tool to use?

Currently, I use Google Docs for writing.
But sometimes it hangs...
What better tool can you recommend?

I use LibreOffice
It's free and has just about everything I need

I use Open Office
It's basically Microsoft Word but Free.
It's got the same aesthetic (like where all the tools and stuff are) and everything which I like.
Only complaint is that the Dictionary / Thesaurus are pretty outdated. So if you typo a word you have to google it sometimes.

Did you know that in Windows 11, you can press “Win+H” and use your microphone to have the text typed?

It is. OpenOffice doesn't keep adding as many 'bells and whistles' and might be a tad more stable. I use Libre mostly because it comes with most Linux distributions and implements more OpenType features. I need my small caps.

It is very similar. LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice.
I've tried both, and for some reason Libre felt better,

I use Scrivener. I used to use Word various free programs (yWriter/ Wikipad) to write and organize all my notes. Scrivener let me do all that in one program. Last I checked Scrivener lets you try it for 30 non-continuous days.

Obsidian for the world building, scrivener for the actual writing. (although I'm sort of leaning not to publish book form but far from there anyway).
Thinking a bit in Inkle but don't want it to be a complete text adventure where you run of, hope to be eaten by a grue... Idea is growing...

On the visual front checking out darkref to replace pureref (but pure is so... easy... just lacks a bit in helping to organise and Allusion is dead)

If you want to write in Google Docs or any other online writing tool for that matter, you have to split your manuscript in chapters. So each chapter gets a single file. And only when your done you start combining them into a single file.

In my experience with multiple different online writing tools, you start running into hanging software after something like 25k words. There's simply too much text to render, especially with all the unseen bells and whistles attached to word processing software.

I personally just write in an offline version of Word. I have it, it works with every other knows piece of text software out there, it does what it needs to do, and there's no chance my writing will disappear into the aether because a company went bankrupt or decided to no longer support some piece of software.

Well, I've said many times, I write mostly in Word (an offline, 2016 version), and often just in windows notepad. Those are my go to tools.

I have scrivener, and I have a bunch of notes in it, but I dont really 'use' it.

For backup, I have a script which writes things to a different PC in my house (which is still off from the last power outage...I need to fix that). And I email my manuscripts for home to work a lot, so I have a lot of copies.

I have Libre Office, but dont use it. My Adobe broke, so I was using Libre to edit PFD's, but now my Adobe is fixed. (Also, Gimp turned out to be more useful for this.)

I need to upgrade all of it, I am just being lazy about it. I also need to replace my car, and I am being lazy about that too. I just keep refilling the antifreeze and driving on
