I've just begun reading Parzival, one of the great works of medieval literature. Early on, the author is giving his audience the background (which includes why they should all appreciate how hard he worked) when he says this about his hero and his story:
a brave man slowly wise
That is one of the best, and surely the most compact, blurbs I've read. This guy had it down back in the 1200s.
