So I want to write a story. I am thinking of a power system. But I was thinking of using gu as the medium for usage of power. Gus were the main medium of power usage in the world of reverend insanity. But I was thinking of creating something different like how power is used. Like if you have read reverend insanity, you know how the power is used, but I am thinking of creating a different ecosystem, although concepts like perseverance gu and things will remain the same. But I am not sure if it is correct to use or not. So want to ask abt the opinion of people here.

Seems complex, and I have not encountered it elsewhere. I suspect if I knew it, I would know the source and that would impact my assessment of your creativity...but ideas are not protected. I dont think you would get in any legal trouble with it, unless it was a complete theft.

yeah, that is the issue. That is why I am not comfortable with using gu. But like you said, the complexity is what makes the power system lovable. It is the reason the power system is much better than any other power system i have ever seen. And because the power system is complex, you can create quite a new power system by using the base, but then the creativity is lost.

hm, but the kind of story that I want to write is different. And I don't want to use cultivation system, which every novel uses. That in itself decrease the novelty of the novel. Well, feels like I need to create a new power system only.

If you do, I'd advise you to research the real-world source of the word and the concept in Chinese folklore. So you know what you're working with - historically, culturally. If you just copy the gu exactly the way Reverend Poison used it, your use of the concept may by rights be called derivative.

If you're seeking novelty, add your spin on the power system. Take it and interpret it through something you really love. In my power system, which is an elemental one, etymology, semantics, and perception are important to how powers manifest, so if a character truly believes that swinging his arm when throwing a fireball makes it faster and stronger, it'll be faster and stronger.

I took the elemental power system and infused it with my passion for linguistics. Do the something similar. Your passion meets gu.
