I am thinking about this. You're not talking about a god of gods, or a god who is in charge of Heaven. More like a parallel to a rain god, just that he is in charge of religion, not rain. DO I have this right?

A sort of 'gatekeeper to the divine,' maybe? Aka, an 'elder god' - the deity other gods have to deal with to maintain their status.

I mean...I suppose...but...

If I was a god, and I had a following, I dont think I would care too much if some other god laying claim to religion as a sphere of influence said I was not doing it right. He can go suck eggs.

I am not sure how that could really take hold. Tell Zeus he's doing religion wrong. See what happens ;)

Some people believe Hinduism has 330 million gods. With that number, anything that could have a god attached to it, will (though these aren't really gods in the same sense as in Greek mythology...).

So sure, you can have a god of religion. Why not. The interesting question more is, what does that actually mean in practice? Why would someone worship him? What would he influence? That sort of thing.

Just throwing out ideas, but he could be the deity looking after religious buildings and texts and be the one who actualy looks after priests. That sort of thing.

I personally wouldn't give him a dual role. If he's also the god of justice, then in practice, he'll probably only be the god of justice, unless he has a very distinct set of tasks as god of religion.

Would this god be a keeper of knowledge, documenting the religions of both old and new gods? Or are they just documenting anything that happens that includes the gods? Are they even a full god? Or are they a demigod tasked with documenting important dates and happenings by a higher deity?

I don't know, man, I'm just spitballing.

Well you know, you need someone to go around making sure that the local river god isn't pressuring the daughters of local villagers into becoming his brides, that the god of luck is distributing luck appropriately instead of only blessing whoever can pay the most and to hunt down the cultists of the cthulu-y taboo gods.

id say there is a lot of other information to come to a "correct" answer for yourself.
On a base line "is this possible?" absolutely. In older times the christian god was often thought of in this way. king of kings, lord of lords, god of gods. A god in charge of other gods. You could also look at it more of an aspect to that god. A god who's power/presence/being is religious worship, ritual, spirituality etc.

I think a good thing to ask yourself is what is this for? What is their place in a story or world building project? Does it make sense for this kind of being to exist in your world? Are the complications of the question worth answering? Does the complication of it make it something you want to answer?

The realm of god, is a blasphemous one. They seem to be able to cast plague or plight, in one fell swoop. They believe in goodness and life, not in evil and death. Though the hero may disagree, they are always proven wrong, in the end.

What concerns me, is why they enter the realm of good, so often. There is the musings of an acolyte, that seems to have good fortune with the concept. There is the blessing of a weapon, from a deity. The gift of sight, from a demon. The gift of immortality, but no god, just the cries of the fallen.

Personally a "god of religion" does not make much sense to me and to me it feels like a lot of headache for little gain.

An overseer, god or not, who keeps an eye on what the others gods are up to makes more sense to me. Especially if something would happen with this overseer and the mice starts to dance on the table when the cat isn't there anymore and, you know, conflict, drama and the story happens because of that.

Usually, deities symbolize things like creation, nature, or human qualities. Do you mean a god who acts like a guardian or ruler of religion itself?

I think the most likely form of this is "god" in the sense of being an impersonal force like the Tao, or well, the Force from Star Wars.

It's there to provide balance (either between good and evil or some other dichotomy like order and chaos.) This "god" could provide balance to prevent any one religion or gods (in the polytheistic sense) from becoming too powerful.

You could make he/she evil. That would explain why there is more than one. Or maybe a fault, like memory or anger.
