Hello! I'm New! Fantasy Screenwriter :)

Hello all!

Excited to find a community of fellow fantasy writers - I'm a screenwriter based in Canada.

My latest project was writing the first pirate vertical film (shot specifically to be watched on a phone), which we're just finishing up post-production on and hopefully releasing in the coming month or so! The tone was very inspired by two of my favourite films, The Princess Bride and Pirates of the Caribbean, though someone compared it to The Mummy the other day as well - which I absolutely will take! Absolutely a joy to write, and while the tone is definitely light and escapist, we got to incorporate a fair bit of authentic treasure lore, ancient beings and Solomonic magic themes throughout our cursed treasure storyline.

The vertical screenwriting format has been super interesting to jump into - as an independent filmmaker as well, it's delighted me that it makes it much more possible to shoot a feature-length fantasy on a limited budget - hugely exciting in terms of being able to see independent projects fully realized. Apart from that, the style very much leans into fast pacing and structure, which somehow has overridden my tendency for writer's block... I don't think I've ever written anything so smoothly.

It definitely has me inspired, and upcoming projects include a swashbuckling sequel and potentially a vampire dark fantasy... as soon as I get that outline done :p

Excited to be here!
Julie

Thanks! :)

Vertical meaning shot with a cinema camera and full film crew, but in portrait orientation, and the framing of the shots is designed to look good on a phone, plus they have a very fast-paced plot structure as well - So it definitely looks like a professional-level film, but because the frame is smaller, there's less set dressing, and the shoots tend to go super fast - usually only 8-10 days to film a whole feature-length vertical.
