how to create more original metaphors?

To break someone’s heart, hit the nail on the head, and a sea of tears.—What do they share each other? Right, they are metaphors.

But how do you create a more original one than those? (The Room 101 in George Orwell’s book 1984 is a good one. It’s often used in movies) I mean classic metaphors are bleak. The reader isn’t interested in them often.

So, how do you create a metaphor?

By first seeing what frames of reference are applicable to your character/world and planning around that.
For instance: "Hitting the nail on the head" might not make sense if your story revolves around talking fish in the deep sea. It will to the audience, but not for the fish.
