I need your collective thinking powers!!

We have an event/celebration here in my town every year. It marks the end of fall basically and is the last few days in October (usually Thursday/Friday/Sat/Sun). They have two different parades and every year I tell myself I want to enter one of them or both, but never do.

This year's theme is Mardi Gras. I am now wanting to consider being a part of either parade. The first is a night time lighted float parade. The second is the daytime parade which lasts about 2-3 hours with exception to last year which was nearly 4 hours long.

I want to do a float as an author. I write military fiction and I also write fantasy.
Give me some ideas for a small float I could build. I have never done one and am trying to think of ideas, but just coming up blank!

If it's Mardi Gras, always beads.
