The Heist Trope

How do you resolve this? There is the idea of The Gollum and The Ring, or The Fitz and The Fool. It can be found in both fantasy and non-fiction. Possessing only to gain a deal only to lose to pride.

I’ve been having these weird thoughts lately like is any of this for real or not?

I think I would resolve this with either the successful execution of the heist, after much difficulty, or with a realization that the heist is more harmful than good to the MC or characters, and they grow instead, giving it up.

I dont think I have a heist in my current story, and I dont really go around picking from a bag of tropes, do you?

The heist trope is a classic for a reason, it’s all about tension, clever plans, and unexpected twists. Whether it’s a high-stakes robbery or a daring con, the thrill of the setup and execution never gets old. Just make sure your crew is memorable and the stakes are sky-high.

Nothing wrong with any trope done well...theyre tropes because (at some point) they were great.

The old "possession vs. obsession" spiral classic. Gollum and Fitz are perfect examples of how hunger for a thing (power, purpose, love) twists into self-destruction. Pride tricks you into thinking you’re holding the leash… until you realize you’re the one being dragged.

As for the "is any of this real?" itch, welcome to the writer’s (and philosopher’s) curse. Reality’s slippery when you spend too much time in the cracks between worlds. Maybe the answer’s in the losing: the moment you stop grasping is the moment the thing you wanted stops owning you.

(Or maybe we’re all just goblins hunched over our shiny word-rocks. Who’s to say?)
