is there any way i can have "don't subscribe" as my default setting? i come here every day, and i don't need my email inbox littered with reminders about responses to posts that i've already seen.

I wouldn't mind something like that as well. I post a lot, so I get about 20 emails a day. There is a way to get rid of the subscriptions you have, but I don't know of a way to just block the subscriptions altogether.
Go to Settings at the top.
Go to General Settings in the menu on the left.
Look for Default Thread Subscription Mode.
Choose Through My Control Panel Only.
Click Save Changes at the bottom.
Come back to this post and click Thanks!
This doesn't unsubscribe you from threads you're getting emails about, just future ones. I think I still get emails from the One-Word-At-A-Time Challenge and the Share-Your-Map threads.

At the top of the individual thread, click on "Thread Tools" and then "Unsubscribe." That should do it.
