Read this the other day and I think it's spot on. Being that we try to avoid foul language here on the site, I've linked this with a mature language warning. So view at your own risk. But the advice here is solid. Wendig is always right on the money I think.

He has several cheap books about writing that are funny that I'd recommend getting. I'm currently reading a sample of his book The Blues Blazes and it's pretty good so far. Like urban fantasy meets a mobster movie.
