When do you expect to be put into the main story?

As another fwiw, I am coming to realize I do two (at least) kinds of writing. One is the story. The other is me telling the story to me. That's the stuff that winds up getting cut. I don't really know how a scene is going to play out. Or, more commonly, I don't know exactly what the setting looks like, how people are going to move through it, etc. So I write it all out.

Once done--sometimes, even as I write--I realize that I don't need to describe that building; conversely, I do need to describe where the sun is. And so on. But I have to tell the scene to myself first, just to get it clear. Only then can I figure out what needs to be told to the reader.

All of which is by way of saying: write it all and don't worry about what's the main story. You'll get a feel for it.
