Writing Fantasy, Sci-fi, and some MG Adventure stuff

Hello! I'm Jay from Arizona and got into writing fiction a few years ago (with little tiny pokes at it since I was a kid). Indie published a kid's book called Zombies Ate My Poodle! and stopped working on a fantasy series of short stories to write Rock and Roll Vampire Astronauts, a sci-fi romp that I hope will be done(ish) by the end of the year. At which point I'll be switching back to the fantasy.

I grew up on a steady diet of Doc Savage books. That and playing DnD campaigns influenced my fantasy series -- I wanted to write about a troupe of friends who would have adventures together.

Marvin’s Marvels, a traveling show by day, resistance fighters by night. They crisscross a kingdom under martial law, hiding their covert missions behind circus wagons and painted signs.

Oh yeah, I also graduated from Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Clown College (class of 1980!) which also seems to have influenced that series... ;)

Stumbled on this forum by accident and like what I see. Thanks for having me!

I attended Clown College when I was 17 and it was the first time I'd really been away from home.

I learned all the "normal" things like making exploding pants, riding an elephant, and falling off an 8-foot ladder without hurting yourself. It was a 12-16 hours a day, 7-days a week, 12-week bootcamp that was more than just "act goofy."

I learned that no matter how many people had told me how funny and clever I was, there existed others so far ahead of me that I could only work hard to try and catch part way up.

I learned that the biggest disappointment -- no, actual heartbreak -- you run into won't kill you, it only feels like it for a while.

I learned the the world was a lot more colorful than the parts I grew up in.

And even decades later I learned it makes a good addition to a resume -- they want to see what the guy who went to Clown College is like. :)
