Will trade proofreading/editing for followers

Weaver

Yeah. Now let me explain that subject line...

I'm a professional proofreader/editor. (I'm not allowed to advertise on Mythic Scribes, but that doesn't change the facts.) I also write fiction -- lots and lots of fiction. And in recent times, I've been blogging about my writing, and things related to writing, and sometimes just stuff that I feel like blogging about.

Here's the problem: I'm not what you'd call an active person when it comes to social media; it has the word social in it, after all. My blog has all of one follower, the person I refer to as Loyal Reader. (We've known each other for a while, and have been beta readers for each other's fiction.) I'd like to change that so I don't feel quite so much like I'm shouting into the void. I need feedback.

So here's the deal: I would very much like people to read and comment on my blog. I'm willing to proofread a short passage of fiction in trade for that. If someone were to start following my blog -- and by that I mean actually follow it and sometimes comment, not just click Follow and then never visit it again -- I would do more than just proofreading in exchange; I'd offer editing as well. Perhaps even for more than a single short work of fiction, depending.

(I should point out that I do know the difference between real comments and fluff. No cheating.)

Weaver,

I have followed your blog (and will visit it), and have added your blog RSS feed to my Twitter so every time you post something new, it will be tweeted to my followers.

I generally do this for authors I follow to more easily keep track of their posts by visiting my own twitter feed and looking through everything which has been tweeted.

I've only got 2,000 Twitter followers, so it won't get you a ton of traffic, but at least it's something!

I don't expect anything in return, I just appreciate you already visiting my website, reading and leaving feedback.

Thanks,

Dan

Was my pleasure. I like your story. As I said, please write more.

"Only" 2,000 Twitter followers? Friend, I've got fewer than 50.

A clarification on the 'proofreading/editing for followers' deal:

It is not my intention to exclude novelists from the offer. If you write long fiction instead of short, I'll proofread an equivalent in chapters instead of a short story.

I too am now a follower.

I'd like to take you up on the proofreading at some point - but not until I feel I've actually contributed something other than being able to receive mails about your updates.

The end of November approaches. (Mwahahahaha...!) So chances are, some of you are going to have some fiction in need of proofreading/editing in the next month or two. The next month or so would be a good time to take advantage of that offer of free proofreading/editing to people who follow my blog.

I'm not a professional editor or proofreader, but, as a service on my blog, I do offer feedback. I'm amazed that more people don't take me up on it...

Weaver,

I may take you up on this. If I finish a chapter soon that I'd like another set of eyes on, I'll follow you and send it your way.

Thanks!

So it looks like me following your blog actually failed the last time. I clicked the link, but never actually got on to the confirmation mail. It's sorted now though. :)

Brian: I'd take you up on it, but considering our differences in style I'm happier not subjecting you to that. I'm fine with the more bite sized chunks of feedback I get in the Showcase threads. :)

Hey Weaver, I checked out your blog and followed. Looks pretty good. As a fellow blogger I would like to recommend adding other options to follow your blog. Some people use google, blognetwork or a whole host of other systems. Adding gadgets with other following options gives people the choice of how they'd like to follow. Also, adding buttons for Twitter, Facebook, etc will help people easily share your blog and get some traffic. Happy blogging!

Weaver,
I followed your blog. I might take you up on getting some bits and pieces edited...although I prefer to let my work sit unread!

Still I joined, your articles seem interesting and I'm looking forward to becoming one of you "loyal readers".

Weaver,

I followed you, and I have a chapter ready for editing. I couldn't find an email address to send it to you, though. Did I miss it? If not, you might consider adding one to your blog.

Also, I agree with RS McCoy. I had a hard time finding the "follow" button.

Thanks.

Brian

EDIT: If you want, you can email me at [email protected], and I'll send the chapter to you in the reply.

Thanks for doing this!

I did say that "social networking" isn't my thing, right? :) I will do what I can to add more/better ways for people to follow my blog. Thanks muchly for the recommendations. My clone is far more computer-savvy than I am, and I'm sure he will be able to help with this.

Brian, I'll be contacting you soon about that chapter. (My email address is [email protected], and yes, I'll add that to my signature here, too. :) )

Understood.

Hopefully, you've at least found my comments helpful. Speaking of which, if you have a chance, check out today's blog post of an excerpt that I edited. You might get something out of it.
