About a name

So, as of now it's 1:45 AM eastern time, and I have finals beginning tomorrow, and I know I'm burning out my brain, but I have a quick question.

I have a male wizard character whose name is Solaris. Solaris is a real name. However, I've only seen it two or three times, and it was a girl's name all those times.

What do you guys think? Is it a girl's name or is it unisex? If it is a primarily feminine name, do you think it's weird to have a man with a female name? (What would that be called? A trans-name?)

I actually have a company in my WIP called Solaris. Great name. If you worry about it not seeming "male" enough you could spell it Solarus... Looks a little more masculine but sounds very similar.

No, I was just wondering at its intended gender because I took the name from a female character in a story, and all the books/stories/other media I've seen it in had it as a girl's name.

Just depends on the naming/language conventions of your world or society. Maybe in that language "-is" endings denote masculine. Maybe they don't. Maybe names aren't gendered.

If it helps, my go-to name site is Behind The Name, and they don't have Solaris listed except as "user submitted" - but that listing says either male or female.

Stacy is another one. Ashley used to be a predominantly male name and of course isn't any longer but is still unisex.
