North Idaho/Eastern Washington Critique Group

Hey all, I don't know if any of you live in my area but if so, I posted this on Craigslist today and thought I'd extend and focus my reach a bit in the search for a group of writers who can meet in person and help each other get better.

I hope a fellow Mythic Scribe can take part!

Looking for a focused Writing Group

I am a fiction writer of intermediate skill. I am looking for a group of writers (and/or avid readers) to get together with and critique each other's work. My search has been somewhat fruitless as of yet and I've concluded that I may have to start one myself. There is a great group, also posted here in the 'groups' section, that I would love to join but it's not exactly what I need. I'm just hoping that there are others in the local area with the same goal.

Personally, I write mostly fantasy/dark fantasy but also historical fiction, sci-fi, thriller etc. I am more interested in craft than genre at this stage in my writing career and want like minded individuals to meet with who are ready to dig in and get better at writing.

Writers of higher skill levels are also very welcome - published or not - to act as mentors to the group. I expect anyone who claims to be a great writer to prove it, of course. If your writing is not as good as you claim, you may still join the group as a regular member but perhaps with some injury done to your pride ;)

If there is enough interest, I will be happy to coordinate everything, which basically amounts to establishing meeting locations and times that work for everyone. This group would not be about snacks, publishing news/info, current events or other stuff. Obviously food is fine, and depending on location/time and group dynamics, I wouldn't even mind if people wanted to have a few beers or something but I want to avoid fluff.

This is about becoming better writers.

Peer review is one of the best ways to do this. It will be democratic in function so no one will be "in charge" or anything. The only things that I personally have no interest in reading/critiquing are non-fiction, fan-fic (unless it's AWESOME), erotica and offensive subject matter (I interpret "offensive" as including racism/sexism, of any kind, unnecessary gore/violence/depravity etc.). Dark themes are very welcome but, please, no writer self-gratification. Honest fiction of all other kinds is welcome.

If you're interested, please text or email. If I even get two other people, I'd get this rolling right away; meeting as often as is plausible. With only one other person, I'd be happy to do a critique-partner thing. Whatever works and is beneficial for all involved.

DISCLAIMER:
If you are under 18, you probably shouldn't respond. If you really want to and can provide proof that you have permission to join, I will consider it/let the group decide or whatever. I've met a few teenage writers who are awesome so it's possible that you would be a great addition. It's more a matter of legal adulthood... and, honestly, I don't want to deal with teenage drama. If you aren't into that either, great!

This sounds pretty cool. I hope you get a decent turn out.

Also - I tried to fight the urge but couldn't resist including this. It's always the first thing I think of when I hear "Idaho"...

I hope so too. No luck yet... North Idaho isn't exactly a breeding ground for the writerly type.

That's just about the strangest M.Video/Song ever... I don't get it at all. It makes me feel awkward like I'm watching something that was made just for them, in private.

Hey my friend, check this out! If you already know about this, then please disregard.

Best of luck!

Thanks, Reaver! I wasn't aware of this organization. I bet they could put me in touch with any number of folks in my same boat as myself. I'll reach out to them :D
