My Magical World

I need some help to create my magical world.

In my imagination, the world where my story happens is a fictional terrestrial blue planet called Earth, which includes many continents, countries and empires. I want the countries of this Earth to be based on the Empires we all learned in History classes, but I want to give them different names. These are the Empires I want to re-create:

  • The Roman Empire
  • The Gaul
  • The Edo Period Japan
  • The Ancient India
  • The Imperialist China
  • The Ancient Persia
  • The Ancient Egypt
  • The Ancient Mongolia
  • The Ancient Isreal
  • The Northern Tribes of Inuit, Yupik and Aleut

I don’t know every Empire that existed, I think these are the most important ones but if you know some of others you think can be interesting I’ll be glad to add them.

Basically, my story will tell the adventures of a young boy who went to an Academy of magic named (I also need the name for the Academy), in order to become a great Magician. In this world, trapped between antiquity and technology, every single living thing produces an invisible energy called Ch’i. That energy allows them to produce spells with the ability to manipulate elements, heal people or even fly. Each country (Empire) has it’s own magic academy. But our hero enrolls the one in the Gaul-Based Empire.

So actually what I need right now is the names for each country (empire) and the name for each of the Schools in the countries.

Thank you.

You'll need to make your own names. There are many ways to do this. You can look for ancient names for these, or names in another language for these, or simply fiddle about with the spelling.

If you don't want the new names to suggest the old in any way, there are a number of name generators online.

Problem is, I’m not really good at it. Like, I think I might be good for the story writing but the cities, buildings, ... naming... That I really am not good at all. That’s why I would appreciate some help

Well, if you plan on being a fantasy writer with fantasy worlds you're going to have to practice or learn to do some research. You can't just go around expecting other people to do your worldbuilding for you. Naming is an important element of fantasy writing and like everything else you have to work at it to get good.

The English names for those cultures you mentioned above are mostly derived from Greek or Latin names. You could do some simple research and look for a name used by the actual people of that culture. Often there are many names used in the culture. Pick the one you like best or is the least well known. (And you'd be surprised how many readers will not be familiar with these names.)

Or you could just make up completely unrelated names by using random name generators online which you can find with a quick google search. Or you could do it the old fashioned way by sitting down and throwing syllables together until you come upon something you like the sound of.

Also, to all those people who say "I'm no good at ..."

Sez who?

Sez you? But who are you to judge? The only time I'll accept anyone saying they are no good at something is after they have tried, multiple times, *and* have been told they're no good at it by a wide range of impersonal readers.

The author is the very last person to judge what they are no good at.

Stop using "I'm no good at..." as the reason for not trying. Go. Do.

Publish, or at least get beta readers of your _completed_ works. Then we can talk. I've seen this often enough that can almost promise this: when you come back, you won't be saying "I'm no good at ..." -- you'll be talking about the aspects of the craft where you intend to improve.
