Flourish Editing: Free Critique Monday!

Taken from their website: Flourish

Begins Monday, January 7, 2013. Have you ever received a form rejection from an agent or publisher? Well, we'll tell you what they didn't take the time to. Want to know how much potential your book seems to have? We'll tell you. Once a week, we throw open the gates and offer our expertise.

You mean, someone is actually going to critique my manuscript?

Yes. The beginning, anyway. That's hard to come by these days, we know. That's why we're offering this service. Once a week we'll roll up our sleeves and deliver some honest, helpful opinions. As you can imagine, this service is quite popular, so we have to limit ourselves to the first 750 words of your text. This isn't because we're not enjoying your work, but simply because it wouldn't be fair to everyone else in the line.

I just got the results back and I'm agreeably surprised. I got both an email with an evaluation of the work in total and an in-depth edit, where they changed some things themselves, suggested other changes and gave clear and logical reasons for everyting. They pointed out my faults, as: wavering between close/distant 3rd person, still too much exposition, etc. All very professional.
If this is their usual standard of editing, I wouldn't be afraid of engaging them.

Thanks for linking to this. I submitted the first 741 words of Power of the Mages. We'll see how it goes.

Seems like great advertising for them, btw.

In the interest of full disclosure: I bumped into Flourish Editing on Twitter a few weeks back and submitted a 3k piece to them for "mentoring" at 1.5c/word (mentoring is editing with in-depth commentary for why I should change things, pointing out routine bad habits, etc.).

To me, it was worth every penny.

The editing/comments and guidance they returned to me were both professional and extremely helpful. Flourish is run by Salome Jones and Tim Dedopulos. I have worked mainly with Salome, but Tim did a piece for me today for Free Critique Monday, and it was amazing as well.

They also do blogging on their site as well.

Got my sample back in about three hours. I was impressed by their work (and not just because they were highly complementary :) ). I think that the suggestions made will improve a piece that I've already spent a lot of time editing.

Again, Xaysai, thanks for posting the link.
