Publishing

I don't know if anyone is interested in this or not, but since we are all writers and some of us one day hope to get our work published, can there be a section for Publishing Companies? I know there are a lot out there, but I think it might help.

What do you think?

I think that is an excellent idea. I know a decent bit about production and copyediting having worked for a textbook publisher, but I do not have the faintest idea about the exact processes for fiction companies. What kind of threads would be posted there?

Company info? How to submit? Helpful Tips on Manuscript Preparation? I think it'd be a great group of threads, so I fully support this. Good idea, Meg!

Yep, that's what I'm hoping for. Since there are some companies that areonly looking for mysteries or Sci-Fi or Non-Fiction, I just thought it would be good to know what companies favor more of our type of styles.

Terrific idea

This is a very good idea, Meg. I'm keen on adding a Publishing forum which would encompass this and related topics.

I am going to wait for a little while though, until our membership has grown a bit more. One of the tricky things about starting an online community is balancing the number of forums with the membership level. If you have too many forums and not enough members to keep posting regularly in each one, it can backfire.

But once our membership has grown substantially, this will be one of the first additions. Given our current rate of growth, we should be there sooner rather than later.

Could it be made clear which country the information is for, perhaps? Only because it differs in key parts between the US, UK, Australia, etc...

But I would love to see, and assist with submitting information :)

That makes a lot of since Star, I concur. But here's something to consider as well. As a publisher, my old boss received manuscripts from all over the world, so many of the companies are probably not limited too much by geographical location. Many of my favorite authors are "foreign" from the United States, but are mainly published by U.S. owned and run companies.

Thinking about it though, I do think that there are individual branches for several of these companies in both the UK and Australia. It would also be interesting to see if we end up having anyone with interest in a publishing company that does translation services to distribute outside the English community. Hmm... who knows?

I like this publishing thread idea, but we're doing good on membership building BD, so we can all wait a little bit before we get going on it. It is a dangerous game to put too many forums for to few speakers.

I am always looking for places to publish, especially now that I am looking for places to publish! Yes, that was redundant!

Helpful links for story or novel markets would be great. Also articles from people in the publishing industry would be double great. I'm in Japan, so I have a very limited amount of English resources I can find in book stores here. Any info I can get from multiple sources is really appreciated.

The publishing forum is now live. :)
