Sent out my first batch of queries, and already had my first rejection. Standard 'this is not for me but thank you for the showing'. Now just twiddling my thumbs waiting on the rest of them. The process itself was pretty eye-opening, some things were far trickier than I'd expected, like the...
Rewrites are done, and I've gotten this thing as correct as I reckon it'll get. It grew by four thousand words, then shrunk by thirteen thousand post-editing. Ran it through the usual family and friends but also my writing group and mentor, whom I am very grateful for. Now to query letters, a...
I just finished my novel's first draft, which came to under 129,000 words. Not relishing the rewrites I already have planned, and the ones I'll discover are needed but it feels great to have the story done. Whoo!
I'm working on my own first novel, just hit 117k words and expect to be finished the first draft in the next week or so. It's been a bit of a slog at times and an absolute blast at others. What the first few months taught me was that I, personally, need a word quota to make me sit down and...
I can't see anything wrong with it other than maybe the pairing. Troubled, dark 'prince' and healing peasant girl has been done to death so many times I'd think it difficult to keep engaging. The kidnapping of magical folk is interesting, as is his connection to it. Sounds like a good read.
I think my best habit would be sticking to what's irking me in the story at the time I sit down to add to it. If a character issue needs to be addressed, I'll tackle that. If I'm unhappy with a certain scene, I'll rework it instead of bulling ahead. Sometimes it can slow me down but I find if I...
After David Farland's passing last year, I unearthed my copies of his Runelords series and read them. Found myself loving the endowment shenanigans and bits and pieces that went with it, such as multiple runelords linking to one another and forming a 'serpent'. Or that magical super-strength...
I find that reading some of my favourite authors often helps me to break through a lull, especially if it's one I haven't touched in a while and I find things I'd forgotten. I'll often read different writers depending on what I'm struggling with, whether it's dialogue or maybe the pacing of a scene.
Robin sounds far more terrifying, in that Zeke's power is a bit like that of a natural disaster. Scary, and unstoppable, but you know all of that. Having a threat that can insinuate itself into your most intimate spaces at all times creates a different kind of fear.
Hey all,
I joined to read more of other people's writing/writing experiences and find stuff like resources for worldbuilding. I'm writing my first go at a fantasy novel atm, about 64,000 words in, and I hope to try to finish it by the end of this summer.
Thanks for having me :)
