my fantasy planet is trillions of years old, so where is the tech? (explanation)

Forgive me for misspeaking if I am, but if you spend the first 10 or so chapters explaining the backstory of the planet and hardly any of that is 'relevant' to the modern day plot, people are gonna fall asleep. (Not saying that's what you're doing here, just advising against it) There are plenty of games and anime where players and viewers check out before they even get control of the main character, and quite often, unless the story is *really* interesting, this is why.

The best approach would be to bring up the backstory as it's relevant to the plot and just start in the modern times. I have a chapter every now and then that take place maybe months before the plot but not insanely far back. One Piece is King when it comes to this, though it takes way too many episodes to explain what it's explaining.

A good example to follow might be the star wars opening scroll, not too long, not too short, just enough to get you 'tuned in' to the story.
