I hope nobody minds if I mention something that might be of use. I found this cool site through Tumblr and it's helped me keep track of all my major characters for my various stories and original works. It's a database for original characters.

You get 100 characters to start off with, and each entry has spaces for all sorts of information on your character.

This may not only be useful for writing, but also for table top RPGs, where over time there are increasingly more characters to keep track of.
