Does anyone Genuinely like having auto-word completion on?

90% of the time I've ever had the 'pleasure' of using it, or trying to use it, not only does it 'guess' entirely the wrong word, it does so repeatedly. It's 2024 already, word processors should be able to check the rest of a sentence for 'context' and then guess what the missing word is. Not saying it needs to write all of the thing by itself, but the few times I've tried to use the feature as it was intended, it's failed, horribly.

My main gripe is that it fixates on one particular thing. "The martial artist raised their leg high int" yes open office, clearly I mean interesting. or intriguing, there's so many other words that make very little sense in that sentence other than 'into' and yet, it picks the longest, most incorrect word. Honestly I swear they design auto complete to be dumb on purpose to keep you on your toes.

Spellcheck and autocorrect will be the death of us all. One misspelling corrected the wrong way and one moment of inattention someplace like NORAD and bam! Nuclear winter.

That being said, I also can't spell or often find the right word - yay, synonyms! - so I always have them on. I'm also more attentive to what I'm typing than the average bear, so it's unusual for the Great Lord Microsoft to trip me up. Also, I'm lazy.

Personally, I've always thought Word did it to make me look silly or take funny pictures of me. But I have a secret.

Shhh.

I type a hell of a lot faster than I write. Sounds weird, and it looks even weirder. I type like a jackhammer, so me at the keyboard with hands hovering and fingertips stroking patterns into the keys - and then there's the brain and the words! So it's something like Silence Silence Silence... WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM - Silence Silence.

Obviously, I'm just too much for the entirety of Microsoft 365. Also, probably could use a new keyboard. This one wants off for compassionate leave.

I only use autocorrect when writing emails to the boss ;)

I have it all turned off when I'm writing, AutoCorrect, curly quotes, convert to M-dash...I dont want any of it.

Grammarly loathes certain words - 'really,' 'personal' (as in 'personal secretary/possessions'), and 'own,' among others. It insists 'carter' is a proper name, not a profession, and takes issues with characters with nicknames like 'Chimp,' 'Leaf, or 'Sticks.' And the 'premium suggestions' are downright annoying, attempting to change the author's voice.

Grammarly is good at finding typos, missing commas, prepositions, and similar stuff - but even there it misses a lot.

I trust auto correct/completion like I trust the Tesla's self-drive feature.

To me, asking a program to guess correctly via context is like asking it what the best tasting ice cream is.

Mechanical keyboard?
Nope, mechanical keyboards don't last more than about six months with me. I'm ridiculously picky, which is funny in a keyboard slayer. I need the ergonomic type, and really just the one layout. https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Natural-Ergonomic-Keyboard-Business/dp/B079YZHFL1/ This one normally lasts me about 18 months or how long it takes me to batter the lettering off the important keys, is wired because I can't be bothered to change batteries in the middle of a chapter, or a sentence, I'm lazy and that's just how I roll, and it has a emoji button that provides endless entertainment. Drawback? It keeps being discontinued and then brought back. Sick, Microsoft. That's just sick.

Keyboard must be wired, but I despise corded mice because the cords get caught and hijinks ensue.

I once taught the entire NaNoWriMo group on FB how to hotkey the em dash. I can't live without it. Or, more to the point, if I let too many en dashes past me my wife, who is our editor, formatter, and plotter, will strangle me. And then who would destroy all the keyboards?

I don’t use Microsoft…

Not sure I’ve even heard of auto-word completion before - it’s supposed to predict what you are most likely going to write? I just have ordinary spellcheck on where it underlines misspelled words in red and grammar mistakes are underlined in blue, and when you click on them they offer you suggestions. But when writing fantasy I have so many ‘misspelled’ words that I often say ‘ignore spelling’, more often than I misspell regular words. I always use the mobile version of this website though so often things things get misspelled on here…

I’ve also never heard of mechanical keyboards…I would have thought all keyboards be ‘mechanical’. All I can seem to find online is that gamers prefer them because they sound more clicky and have LEDS.

I like the auto complete, and auto suggested reply in emails but only for their comedy value.
A few weeks back, someone emailed me to let me know that they had "passed on" an item of equipment to a new student.
The auto suggested replies were variation on "My condolences at your loss"...

All of the annoyances and conveniences listed above. But do the conveniences outweigh the annoyances? I haven't decided yet.

I misspell too many things on purpose, and I know how to spell pretty much every word I use, it's just my damned fingers or thumbs who don't know how to spell, heh hhe.
auto correct can help with some words (restaurant is stupid) but otherwise I tend to leave it off and just google search the word myself.

I don't use MS for anything except Word when dealing with editor, but somehow, it pops up somewhere on my Mac... Mail maybe? I haven't found a single app where autofills or suggestions are useful. Annoying as hell even in spreadsheets.

This is going to sound a little odd coming from someone as severely dyslexic as I am, but I never use any form of autocorrect. This is partly because being dyslexic I can't always tell if the word being completed is the right word for the context, as my spelling and grammar checkers won't pick that up. I know the word will be spelt correctly and will almost always be grammatically correct, but that doesn't mean it is the right word. However, the main reason I don't use the feature is that those sorts of tools take no account of my writing style. Since my stories are written in my prose style that means I can't rely on a tool like that to get the words right, so I as an author don't benefit from it. It's much easier for me to write all the text myself then use my specialised spelling and grammar checkers to correct the text.
