Forgot the name of a writer

So, you know the kind of writing or movie that's so bad it just becomes art? I remember reading about a high fantasy story about twenty years ago written by a teenage boy that somehow got out and was circulated in the seventies or eighties and widely ridiculed, so much so that people challenged each other to keep a straight face while reading it to an audience. The boy was very hurt and when he grew up said the criticism was unfair because he was just a teenager when he wrote it. (He eventually passed away).There's a wiki page. I don't know why I started thinking about it again and it won't leave me alone. Does anyone older than the internet remember?
