Hello From an Old Person

I didn't realize forums like these existed anymore.

I'm a retiree who has decided to finally take the plunge and make all those stories bouncing around in my brain pay rent. I'm currently working on the second novel in a romantasy trilogy that I'm self-publishing. Well, I intended it to be a romantasy trilogy; it has morphed into what a friend calls "Romantic Political Ascension Fantasy" and yes, that is a genre that doesn't seem to exist yet. ;) I found this site while researching magical fantasy battles and am impressed with the articles available here. I thought I'd see what the community is like, so here I am.

Howdy Meema, Welcome here.

Breaking new ground can have its advantages. People like stuff that is a little different from what they've read before.

Nice avi.

What is old anyway? I am 57. And Skip... Well, some of us are up there.
Old is 63. I'm glad to see some others who can claim more than two or three decades here. ;) I like my avatar, too. It's very...me. Without actually being me, since I write under a pseudonym.

Funny, My avatar is very me too ;)

What was the last forum you were on?
Good question! I can't remember, really; I've spent so much time on social media the last few years. I'm totally burnt out on it, though - Facebook has become this toxic, politically partisan wasteland - and I'm looking for a new place to settle, I guess.

I hate facebook. I feel slimed every time I go there. I never use it.

I like little forums like this one.

I've been looking at another one, but it is so busy, I cant keep up. We'll see.

Were you in writing groups there?

I've given up news and politics for lent. But...we don't allow politics here. So...you wont see much of it (but secretly, I do kind of know the politics of most of the members... it just kind of seeps out at times.)

Yeah, I do too. I had to keep my personal social media pages, though, because they're tied to my professional profiles, but I don't log in the personal profiles any more. Unfortunately, it's hard to keep our political leanings out of our every day communications, but if everyone is tolerant of those small prejudices, things can generally be fine. Facebook doesn't do that. I'm all for places that don't allow political discussions.

I think Ravelry still has forums like these, but I haven't been on those for about ten years. I only go there to look for knitting patterns these days.

I do belong to a couple of writer's groups on Facebook, but these days I post most of my writing-related content in the community section of ProWritingAid's website. Nice folks there.

*whispers*huge Trek fan here...
What's your favourite series and characters and/or captains? Mine is DS9, and Spock, Data, Jadzia, Odo, and Seven [most of the resident non-human characters, what a surprise]. Sisko's my favourite captain, but I do like Picard once he's mellowed out a bit around season 3 of TNG. I haven't watched any of the newer shows--Discovery and Picard are too dark and intense for me, so I don't have any interest in them--but I'd really like to watch Prodigy and check out Starfleet Academy, too.

My son and I love to play the "Who's the better captain - Kirk or Picard?" game, because we both shout "Sisko!" I loved Avery Brooks before he was cast as Benjamin Sisko (and love his friendship with Jadzia) and when I saw he'd been cast, I had a huge fan girl moment. LOL Same with Patrick Stewart when he was cast as Picard.

STNG didn't really hit its stride until season 3, and it was a good one, too. My favorite characters in any of them are Worf, Odo, I adore Garak, poor tortured O'Brien (can't STAND Keiko, although Worf delivering their baby was hysterical). Because I actually watched TOS when it originally aired, I'm rather partial to that crew and ship.

The first two seasons of Picard were awful, but they make up for it in season 3. You should watch it - the fan service is excellent. It makes me sad that it's likely Legacy won't come to be.

Ahh, how could I forget Garak! He's a favourite, too, for sure. 😁 Keiko is difficult to like, I think because the writers didn't really know what to do with her, and gave her an excess of unlikable traits. Even on DS9, which excelled at giving the main cast and supporting cast excellent character growth or development, she doesn't get any. Doesn't help that it feels like she doesn't want to be there in the first place, either. She could've been such an interesting character.
Disaster is one of my favourite TNG episodes, though. It's nice seeing the characters all being completely out of their depth for a change, and figuring out creative solutions.

I don't have any way to watch Picard [not going to give Paramount any money after the mess they've made of things], and fan service doesn't do much for me. I'd rather have new adventures with new characters rather than bringing previous characters back.

I just found out a minute ago that Academy is only getting two seasons! 😔 It inherited the Prodigy curse!

Maybe I should make a dedicated Star Trek thread so we can chat more there. 😅

My fav Star Trek was the one everyone hates. I think it was enterprise. Had Scott Bacula as the captain.

Kirk too... When I last watched the series, I was feel such a great sense of wow. Cause everyone was competent.

The new stuff....I have no interest.
