Today I learned that Charles J. Guiteau chose an ivory handled revolver to shoot President Garfield because he wanted it to look nice when it was put on display in a museum after he used it.

THIS is the kind of stuff I wish I could think of when writing fiction. People like this guy, looking at a gun display and saying, "This one here, because it will look so good in a museum some day."

Gotta love history.

Reddit's TIL gives me a lot of ideas for writing too. There was an astronomical one I read last week and made a note to include that in a story - how would a society with a poor understanding of the universe react to it? Been researching Halley's Comet since, as that provides a great example in history.

But yes, that one is fascinating; the way people consider the tools they use when they expect actions to make them famous is certainly something that could be used for a character.
