How do you think a Metroid Movie should go?

My husband and I were talking about these Nintendo movies coming out, and he, apparently didn't know a lot of the backstory of Metroid.
I told him about the Wii game Other M, which told a lot of Samus' back story from when her family was killed by Ridley.
I told him a one off or first film should be an origin story, but it would be cool if it were a series, because with Samus being a bounty hunter who does a bunch of different assignments, there's room for so many different stories with maybe original world building as she visits new planets and faces new threats.

Sorry to be pedantic, but Other M doesn't explain anything about Samus' backstory, much less about her parents being killed nor why Ridley is important. But I hate Other M with the fury of a thousand suns for a loooong list of reasons, so I'll focus on your actual question.
My ideal Metroid movie would be animated, and really lean into the Alien inspirations, but not so much that it tips over and becomes too dark/violent. I'd cast either Houko Kuwashima or Romi Park as Samus, or someone with the vocal range to make her sound confident and powerful.

I am not terribly familiar with Metroid, but if the same company that did Mario is doing it, I have faith they will make a good production. If its Disney...it will fail.

Yeah a lot of people had complaints about the plot. I've seen some of the youtube vids.

No one is making a film yet. For some reason my husband was thinking about this lol

Well..if they make a movie, I would likely go see it. They won some trust from me with Mario. But I am wary of a lot of movie companies now. So I hope they dont blow it. Samus is attractive. That never hurts.

I honestly don't care how it goes, just put someone half decent behind it and don't let M knight touch it with a ten thousand foot pole

That's what I hope for every movie, I don't know that Hollywood can produce it anymore.

The fans want something, but there will be immense pressure to make it something different than what they want. So...if they do it, I hope they dont screw it up.

Like, I will concede that M Knight can make a good movie, when it's his OWN stuff. Or perhaps an original IP that doesn't already exist.
But for the love of god please blacklist the man from ever touching any game, tv show, or comic book, or existing IP like Mulan.
He butchered Dragonball Z
He Slaughtered ATLA (Most fans think he should serve prison time for that gong show)
Just, no, don't let bro touch any identifiable IP period. I don't care how morbidly curious you are. The man HAS ideas, but that doesn't mean any of them are good.

I don't recall anything about the story in Metroid from the early NES/SNES games, and I missed almost everything after that, except for the more recent Metroid Dread, which was pretty cool.

Metroid isn't Mario. It's got a lonely, horror and survival vibe set in deep space. Metroids are an apocalyptic infestation like zombies. Getting that right in a movie right now would be hard, and it'll also screw with the audience expectations, as people will bring in their children expecting something like Mario. So I'd rather they skip the movie and make it a series with eight episode seasons, to license with Netflix. It wouldn't be live action, but it'd need one of those grittier animation styles, like you see in some episodes of Secret Level or Love and Robots.

You'd want the first season to tell Samus' origin, include several chase / being hunted scenes, be full of creepy dread moments where you think it's the end of the world even though nothing really happens, and then end with Samus fleeing a place as the Metroids destroy it behind her. And they should have a plan for how to spread out power-ups and power-downs throughout the series.

And you need a creepy suit scene, like Lost in Space, and of course Iron-Man.
