When a dreamwalker uses their powers, they absorb the tribute into their body and then become known as a spirit. The spirit consumes energy in the dreamwalker's body, this happens because of the difference in power and strength of the user and/or their tribute. This happens with all types of tributes, sometimes the users are stronger than their tributes. A living tribute is born when its user dies, but the tribute remains alive, the powers of a living tribute overwhelm its users. This is not exclusive to living tributes. The spirit is the core of the dreamwalkers' powers, while the tributes are transformed into spirit in the user's body, they consume the dreamwalkers' energy and or while the user has the tribute in their body, they consume the tribute's energy. The amount of energy consumption differs depending on the power and strength of the tribute.

I'm still writing down my ideas, I have trouble choosing the right words. Regarding the setting of my story, it takes place in a world that is recovering from a recent war and preparing for the next one.
