Your memory serves. I didn't know about canned rations, but you're right on the division into corps. I think there was more to it than just supply; it gave him greater flexibility in maneuver, which was exceptionally important before the advent of railroads and motorized vehicles.

A great many factors entered into Napoleon's successes. Many of those factors were unchanged during his defeats as well. He and his times continue to provide fodder for much discussion.
Technically, they weren't unchanged. It is just that what changed was his opponents: they had adopted the very aspects which had made Napoleon so successful, and thus erased Napoleon's advantages.

Napoleon's army didn't get worse, his opponents simply got better. And unless he was personally in command, his military genius couldn't really show beyond said organizational factors. During Napoleon's later campaigns, he always had the most success when he was personally commanding a corps-level or at most army-level operations.
